“…like a dinner plate.”
In a hotel room awake
as dawn
drops
the moon
like a dinner plate
and,
from the slit
between the curtains
hazy mists of morning light
coast in,
like blood from a wound
underwater.
All the birds and sharks
have started
to sing.

Words from the very wise…
This month’s ALL ABOUT PLATFORM BUILDING guest blogger is the one and only Julie Hedlund. Thank you, Julie, for taking the time to share your thoughts on platform building.
Before I move on, I want to mention that registration for Julie’s 12 x 12 picture book writing challenge begins next month. If you don’t know about this wonderful writing community and challenge, it would be worthwhile to give the 12 x 12 page a look.
Now, here’s Julie. . . .
Thanks Alayne for hosting me today! I’m a big fan of your blog, so it’s an honor.
Never has a word inspired so much fear and angst into the heart of an author. Part of that fear, IMHO, is based on myths about platform that I want to bust for you today. My goal is that by the end of this…

A bit for seasonal fun – I like it!
“Santa, thanks so much for taking my call.”
“Who is this?”
“Robin. Robin Newman. Remember me? The children’s book author.”
“What time is it?” asked Santa.
“It’s 7:00 a.m., New York City time. What time is it on the North Pole?”
“Early! Can you call back another time? I need my beauty sleep,” said Santa.
“Of course! But don’t you want to hear that I’ve been a good girl this year? All right, ‘good’ may not be 100% accurate . . . perhaps ‘well intentioned’ is a better choice of words. And ‘girl’ maybe a tad bit of a stretch. How about pre-octogenarian?”
“Robin, since you’re not going to let me sleep, have you been writing every day?”
“Writing every day? That’s a good question. A very good question. You know the beard really looks good on you. Not a lot of people can get away with the beard, red suit…

Brolga Dance
Newly hitched we hit
pop-hot spots in Sydney.
Occasion marked: Us.

Tickets to ‘The Lion King’
in old Capitol Theatre
took us back to Africa.

Sticky Date at Doyles
added more weight
to our love waistlines…

We watched the river,
Opera House teeming,
Coat-hanger tourists.

Sky-high Telecom chats
revolving restaurant
views topped off trip

before Aqua chatting,
large-finned silver
swimmers mesmerize.

Guinness for St Paddy
raised to Shamrock Green.
Chinese gardens walk,

Brolga dance to hotel
suite, (less public for
private celebrations).

Some artwork inspires more than one poem; I’ve already shared the poem published with this painting at my daughter Jessica McCallum‘s exhibition in 2011, but thought you might like to read another one of a few:
BOHEMIA
This is not a painted tapestry
display of exotic influences…
Every prick was welcomed!
Each permanent plunge
through tender tattooed skin
as hearts and flowers fruit and scab,
every coloured defiant stab of free
expression – indelible statements
individually signalling two fingers
smoking satisfaction swirling, up.
