“In the early 80’s Frances and a cinematographer (now director) Peter Aquilina formed Sphinx Productions, a small film/video production company. Their first project together ‘Shattered Windows’ written, directed and produced by Frances won the FTI Young Filmmaker’s Cinematography Award for Peter.
Recommended by Peter, Frances later went on to work for Mid-Western Television (the owners of VEW-8) initially as Secretary to the Managing Director Mike Dorsey (of ‘Daddy’ from ‘No 96’ fame) but once the boss knew of her film background, was in the studio doing the news, ads and eventually on-air each day at 5pm reading ‘Community Diary’.”
Fast forward to February 2018 when 32 yrs later, I was asked to relive those few months broadcasting to Kalgoorlie and the Goldfields. ‘Community Diary’ was the lifeblood of small community news – up to 5 whole minutes before the evening news was presented by Liam Bartlett. Yes, that Liam Bartlett, now at Channel 9. I was supposed to go too, as part of a package deal when MWTV was sold. I didn’t want to – but that’s a whole other story…
So many thanks go to Rachael Day a producer and presenter on ABC Goldfields Radio for inviting me to have a chat. Not really sure I should be sharing it, but it made me chuckle and I hope it does you.
