Fiction is important to me. I get a great deal of pleasure from visiting the people and places created by the imagination and hard work of authors around the world. I read 150ish books a year and I buy twice as many as I read, which is why my TBR pile stand at more than […]

Empty of words — I’ve started so………..
Posted in Writing on November 6, 2019| 1 Comment »
Subdued in my skin and bones, empty of poetry, tired of writing, living a void, avoiding lexically appealing expression, longing to die in the arms of a softly worded phrase, grabbing at air, denying a stare at my soulless soul, a cry for help from an immeasurable hole.
ArtIsTheSpark: Mute

Art, is very often the spark but this particular piece was specifically written while gazing at the 700mm x 700mm artwork, ‘Mute’ .
The ‘JM Exhibition’ was the first (very successful) exhibition of art by my daughter Jessica McCallum held at His Majesty’s Theatre in 2009, on which we collaborated. All but one painting sold on the night.
We have since collaborated on two more very successful exhibitions here in Perth, WA.

Cinema Child — One of These Years…

Standing on the sand, I watched the boats afloat I thought to myself; I must look right cinematic, brilliant, deep, mature all eyes were on me, because I stood out how they must love me… As those ships drifted by, I’d be thoughtful roll my eyes, look to the ground with all the girls watching […]

POEM: My Car

Reading from ‘Hidden Capacity ~ a poet’s journey’ published in Ireland, in 2003 but now out of print. ‘My Car’ was a loving tribute to my silver 1983 Mitsubishi Colt which ran forever before finally giving up the ghost. She saw me through some tough times and I still miss her.

Backstory: MWTV & Radio

“In the early 80’s Frances and a cinematographer (now director) Peter Aquilina formed Sphinx Productions, a small film/video production company. Their first project together ‘Shattered Windows’ written, directed and produced by Frances won the FTI Young Filmmaker’s Cinematography Award for Peter.
Recommended by Peter, Frances later went on to work for Mid-Western Television (the owners of VEW-8) initially as Secretary to the Managing Director Mike Dorsey (of ‘Daddy’ from ‘No 96’ fame) but once the boss knew of her film background, was in the studio doing the news, ads and eventually on-air each day at 5pm reading ‘Community Diary’.”
Fast forward to February 2018 when 32 yrs later, I was asked to relive those few months broadcasting to Kalgoorlie and the Goldfields. ‘Community Diary’ was the lifeblood of small community news – up to 5 whole minutes before the evening news was presented by Liam Bartlett. Yes, that Liam Bartlett, now at Channel 9. I was supposed to go too, as part of a package deal when MWTV was sold. I didn’t want to – but that’s a whole other story…
So many thanks go to Rachael Day a producer and presenter on ABC Goldfields Radio for inviting me to have a chat. Not really sure I should be sharing it, but it made me chuckle and I hope it does you.
POEM: Loose Lettuce Leaf Factory Tour

Loose Lettuce Leaf Factory Tour
The busload waited for another to park,
not Gingin locals
but a global arc
of foreign accents, ages and looks,
my concentration torn
from my favourite book.
I grabbed my novel – another boring tour,
the sign caught my eye
promised so much more.
Avenues of squashed, boxed green,
piled high like trees
wait to be cleaned.
Whilst gentle fingered plastic hands
manoeuvred each leaf
to remove the sand,
bits of mulch, a sleepy slug or two
its entrails smudged
was stuck like glue.
Full mouth askew with unbidden distaste,
my eyes clashed with
a gently smiling face.
Heart skipped to a stranger’s look
as he read the title
of my romance book.
Like turning loose leaves under
ice cool water sprays,
my heart was plundered
in a thousand ways…

“Identity Crisis” by Ben Elton — Mike Finn’s Fiction

I’m not sure how to classify “Identity Crisis”. It feels like a satire except that it’s unflinchingly honest and that kind of honesty makes me wince rather than smile. It’s not a polemic as it’s not selling a solution, just displaying a problem by flaying the surface of it and exposing the bloody mess underneath. […]

You twirled me in pirouette, shaped me like an hourglass, left me here, your creation holding daffodils.
