This should be an interesting read.

Although the paperback is available, I’ve just purchased the Kindle version of  Remnants of Empire  ~ Memory and Northern Rhodesia’s white diaspora by Pamela Shurmer-Smith.

The hard copy was published to coincide with the recent ’50 years of Independence’ celebrations but I have far too many books on my shelves, so this time, Kindle will do.

I absolutely agree about the metal Baobab tree design, as explained in Pamela’s cover notes.

There’s also an interesting music video by Pamela’s very talented musician son, which brought back many memories of my childhood.

Just to let everyone know, I’m busy taking my e-books off Kindle but leaving a couple of print versions of poetry books available on Amazon.

Soon after they were published on Amazon/Kindle, I found the mss available for free download (elsewhere) on the net.    I reported it to Amazon who said they had been copied illegally…  (?)  Not happy, Jan!

I want to try another publishing vehicle to see what their service is like and will let you know as soon as I have set it up.

When I was younger with two little ones, I was right into cooking and housekeeping.

Now – not so much.

If what needs to be gets done, gets done – great.

Otherwise, I know it will still be there later.

Cooking these days, is more about convenience.

So although I don’t usually do this, hey, it’s a great idea:  breakfast, lunch or dinner – in a mug!

A Delicious Dance

In my kitchen

I contemplate a new mix,

a special combination

with heightened flavors.

The perfected recipe.

At last, a chance

to bite into real love!

The thrill of discovery

I’ve tried unsuccessfully

to master, for years.

Many times before,

I tried blending,

picking ingredients

so carefully…

impatiently

stirring the pot.

But I wrongly used

wooden utensils –

failed to find

the perfect dish,

until you added

that extra dash.

That Mysterious tang

which previously

eluded my search –

that ultimate formula.

Tempting my taste buds,

leaving them bereft

of that special essence,

everlasting love.

You are the recipe

and lust the icing

on my now perfected

carrot cake of life.

Vincente Romero © 2007-2009

As I’m focused on picture books for children through my 12 x 12  challenge, I’ve also just enrolled in a class on The Art of the Picture Book illustration class with Shadra Strickland.

(Of course, I could never be as good as Vincente Romaro who’s paintings I’ve just discovered!)

So for a ‘tester’ project, I’m going to use a poem I wrote many years ago (and I mean many) in the early 60’s called “The Prima Ballerina”.

I hope to show you how I adapt it to a PB and slowly, how I have a go at illustrating it too…

The Prima Ballerina

She lives in a world of fairy tales,

all fantasy, happiness and woe.

Floating across the stage in tulle,

fine silk or organza.,

softly pirouettes through the mist,

or dies upon the snow.

This is the world of Ballet

of the Prima Ballerina.

So lithe and slim, so beautiful,

so graceful and serene.

On stage, supremely untouchable

yet so frail behind the scenes.

She’s the Queen of the ‘Corps de Ballet’,

the star with the golden feet,

dancing her way through ‘Petruska’,

‘Swan Lake’ or the ‘Nutcracker Suite’.

The audience, transfixed with awe,

watch silently, as in a dream,

for gripped by suspense and beauty

 – such as they’ve never seen!

They observe the scenery so real,

the superbly made costumes,

but their eyes are fixed on the ‘Bluebird’

and all it’s fine blue plumes.

And when the ballet is done,

And encore after encore taken.

And baskets and bouquets

of flowers dispensed….

There’s a feeling of despair and longing

at the end of such unforgettable enchantment.

Speak Up

It takes more than placement to tell a story.

More than illustration or clever juxtaposition

to speak to our children.  The voice of our words

connects while young eyes search for meaning,

only then are hearts able to hear our stories.

For lovers of books, bookshops will always entice.

I’ve mentioned my favorite bookshop, nestled in Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland is also a Literary Centre, run by Jessie Lendennie, publisher of Salmon Press.  A meeting place for those in the poetry scene in Ireland where Jessie is both necessary and influential.

Across the oceans, here on the Cafe Strip in Fremantle, Elizabeth’s Bookshop has long been a place to fall into soft couches with a favorite tome and lose yourself for a while.

MillPointCaffeBookshop in South Perth serves coffee and is a favorite haunt for a writer friend who literally immerses himself in words, while he creates.

While Boffins Bookshop in Williams Street in Perth City specialize…

The Boffin

Bookshops are like lovers,

they numb in black & white

then seduce you with colour,

titillate and tempt your soul

until you finally let go,

find the courage to close

the book ~ pages which leave

you gasping  The breath of air

on your face feels like a slap.

BIll & Ben Flower Pot Men, updated.

A fellow blogger posted this today and brought back so many memories.

Although I was 16 when she was born, I loved Andy Pandy;   “Here we go Looby Loo, here we go Looby Li, here we go Looby Loo, all on a Satuday night.”

_1420843_pandy300

Also Bill & Ben when I was very young in the UK, then later when I had children of my own, we watched Mr Squiggle, Play School and  Sesame Street, together.

I’m surprised Louise didn’t mention Noddy & Big Ears… Little me loved that show – Golly was my favorite!

blyton-masthead

I had so many Enid Blyton books which I devoured over and over again.

I miss the pace and sweet innocence of that time when children were allowed to just get lost in ‘Walking round the garden, like a teddy bear.  One step, two step, jumping in the air!’

Thanks Louise, for all the memories today.

Newly released Christmas Books.  Now we’re well and truly into November, the shops (and the net) have started their Christmas campaigns and everywhere I turn, I see tinsel.

1481393_10152095900187520_1594176548_n

We’re sending out invites for our usual family Christmas Party and hubby and nephew are practicing their guitars for the carols.

I do LOVE this time of year – just wish my purse felt the same.

This year, I shall be going back to making most of my pressies – sewing or cooking or writing…

But wait!

12SSCover8'Front1 001W

I HAVE a book which would make the PERFECT Christmas Gift for littlies:  “Santa’s Swim”  – although I only have a few paperback copies left.

My inspiration was a little Santa Statue from on top of our Christmas cake and my daughter asking for it.

When I was growing up in Africa it was a favorite ritual for Mum and I to make the Christmas cake.  As I got older, I confess, a lot of the hilarity came from tasting the whiskey before adding to the fruit.  Such great memories, now my Mum is no longer available to hug!

???????????????????????????????

‘Santa’s Swim’ is inspired by treasured memories, of Nanna and her Christmas Cake and Santa, who presided over it.  When Nanna dies, young Mandy wears the little statue on a string to keep Nanna close.  On the beach, one day,  the string breaks and unknown to Mandy, Santa goes for a swim.  Now Santa’s lost, will Mandy ever find him again?  And does it mean she’s lost her Nanna too?

There’s no place for love at this time in my life.

I envy those who achieve the balance of need.

Opportunities ignored in the interest of safe-ness,

flying toward my ability’s determined focus.

Children gone in their own living-dreams direction,

their lessons learnt and heeded.  My job’s complete.

Is this my way of avoiding the ‘empty nest’ syndrome;

gathering materials for comfort as I settle to old age?
