Mytwosentences 72.

My newest blog follower Edward Roads posts 2 sentences with a photo – which I find both  innovative and inspiring.   His latest has reminded me of a poem which I thought I’d share, both are about the unspoken:

Priority Seating

Chivalry’s not dead.

Young man offers an older

person his seat, but

not the young lady. He stands

silently, matching her sway.

truckersmoll

In Rosemary Canavan’s book of poems ‘Trucker’s Moll’, her dedication is “for my mother who started me off”.  I can relate.

140921Poems 003w

My mum also encouraged my youthful angst in my 1968 handwritten notebook, long before keyboards ruined my ability to wield a pen and ink, by putting a little (accountant’s) tick of approval next to poems she liked.  Done in pencil – I hope it never fades… I treasure those little marks.

Rosemary’s poem on page 61 ‘Flowers in March’ was written on St Patrick’s Day in March 2003.

140921TruckersMoleW

I too sat newly arrived in Ireland, watching that same parade on the television,  in March, 2003 and wrote on the same theme.

Baghdad Ballet

A young boy sits, on his mother’s shoulders,

smile-excited in the sunshine, taking part

in a parade. He proudly thrusts the finger

-sign of peace. Nice to see in an Iraqi child

– family bombardered by ‘Shock and Awe’

the night before, apparently forgiving.

But the visual is blitzed as it flashes onscreen,

by the plastic Sten-gun held aloft, back-

ground brandished in the child’s other hand.

Do you think the young lad plays in secret tunnels,

knows where to hide, where doubles walk

to keep the myth alive, the magic tricks

to keep awake illusions of a still-controlled-city.

Streetlights burn in defiance of invaders largess.

Traffic moves through the night while

bright glows explode in distant thunder

shower shrapnel. We sit on green comfy

sofas, presumed warm and safe inside,

miles away watching the performance

on TV young Liam wears red and white,

holds his defiant hurely high – a warrior

enjoying the sunshine day parade

– a protest for peace in Shannon…

12-x-12-new-badge

Nearing the end of my 12 x 12 picture book membership for this year, I’m sticking to the rules for writing a story a month, setting myself little tasks to stimulate my imagination.

So I thought I’d share my latest writing exercise with you. I set the rules as; to write a story about two random words, I pin-picked ‘peaches’ and ‘dancing’.

This is the 1st draft of ‘The Peach Polka’, deliberately written without dialogue, an exercise in actions for illustration. If I ever get around to illustrating it, I’ll post those up too.

130709VisitingSonja (13)

Nanna couldn’t remember what started it – but it was happening more and more.

In the supermarket, suddenly her legs didn’t act like they belonged to her body at all.

Sometimes, they danced away, trying to be somewhere else – without her!

Nanna couldn’t help grabbing whoever was nearby, to dance the polka too.

Waiting to pick up her granddaughter Sonja at school, she danced with the teacher.

What made her lose control – why suddenly burst into dance – at her age?

Today, thankfully, it happened at home. It was Sonja’s new peach fairy doll.

Long peach-y hair, wings of gossamer, she even had sparkling peach shoes.

Nanna and Sonja sniffed and Surprise! Surprise! The doll smelt of peaches too!

Startled Sonja beamed with delight to see Nanna twirling and whirling around the room.

It wasn’t long before Sonja was twirling too, in the new pink dress Nanna had made.

As the white spots twirled, Sonja was almost lifted off her feet with happiness.

Then she was! Nanna took hold of Sonja’s hands as they whirled and twirled together.

For Nanna, dancing with Sonja was a very special and perfect dance memory…

Sonja had the best birthday ever and never wanted the Peach Polka to stop!

While peddling our wares at The Pines Markets at Curtin University yesterday, a new marketeer Noreen Reeves was selling her autobiography.

As writers, we chatted and naturally, I bought a copy of  “Two Shakes of a Dead Lamb’s Tail”   available on Amazon as a Kindle, Hardback or Paperback.

(The book is available from the printer although vastly over-priced!  As ‘they’ are NOT on my list of recommendations, I certainly won’t.)

Noreen and I discovered we’re almost neighbors, both living off Ocean Reef Road.   We weren’t busy due to the rain and wind so I had time to glance sporadically, up to the third chapter, between serving customers.

So far I’ve read; Noreen is about to have her second baby with a toddler who disappears into the jungle but finds his way safely to his father’s school, Tinputz Vocational Centre.  Life certainly isn’t routine for her young family in what seems to be the middle of no-where.  Isolated, disorientated and victims of the oppressive heat and prolific wildlife seemingly with no respite and no regular food supply…

“Familiarity began to settle us into a routine.  The fly-wire installation was completed, which made life more comfortable.  The fockez (flying foxes) could no longer slalom through the windows; however it didn’t deter the geckoes for long.  They were beautiful little creatures and it was sometimes a night’s entertainment watching them chase each other around the walls.  It was however, anathema not to have a plethora of bugs flying and crawling all around us when the lights were lit. “

The book reminds me of my own Colonial upbringing  in Central Africa.  Noreen ‘grows up’ in Bougainville Island, pre-independence New Guinea, then shares her life on the farm near Gippsland Lakes in Victoria and a sheep station in outback WA.

It’s Noreen’s 1st book – can’t help but feel this is only the beginning…

My friend Jessie Lendennie, poet and  Salmon Poetry  publisher extraordinaire loves dogs so much, she called on poetic friends to send their poems about dogs for a tribute anthology;  “Dogs Singing”.

The result is a book I keep on my desk to savor, to delve into, every now an then.

I still miss my own faithful Butchy – often feel him pacing outside the back door and fancy I catch a glimpse of him checking the garden, as I hang the washing.

This poem by Desmond Gough is simply called “Zach” appears on page 61 of 417 pages.

I learnt an embarrassing lesson yesterday; don’t rush!

I hit the ‘publish’ button like I would the ‘enter’ button – big mistake!  Unconcerned, I thought I’d just correct and ‘Update’ which, of course, I did in seconds.

Embarrassingly the preview of the blog post (goes everywhere!) stayed as the original un-edited version although when ‘read more’ was clicked, the corrected version appeared!

Lesson well and truly learnt!  Writing and posting when you’re tired or in a rush – just don’t do it!  I do sincerely apologize.

Hopefully I can make amends with a poem written before love returned to my life.

DOORS CLOSING

How often has the door closed on opportunity for me?

And how many times have I shut it?

‘Well, open it again.’ You say.  Not so easy

when it is wedged with prejudice.

Locked with lies about your femininity

and jammed with judicial errors.

I am an opportunist and I do believe

as one door closes, another… you know.

But sometimes, for my sanity, I take

the easy way out.  My heart’s the same.

I’m not brave in letting that door stand ajar.

The solid barrier protecting my comfort zone.

A jack-hammer wouldn’t be heard now!

I’m deaf to desire and numb to need.

The woolen blanket around my feelings keeps me warm.

I lock the door, pocket the key, work and love in secret.

ROAD RIBBONS TO FOREVER

still cold the orb lay low

quick glimpse then hidden

motor climbing to drown

crow’s haunting early wake-up call

blades of light chop dust and dirt

wheels trundle

bodies bounce

over troughs and ridges

silent stands of hewn wood

strangled by checked metal string

strung as divided zones

of labour or fields of food

for slow-moving wool-balls

unaffected by those

who pass once in a changing

between ghost gums

wind-dancing

don’t press the soft start

for raucous interruption

no technological intrusion

to spoil the quietness

of morning impressions

but watch silently

anticipating adventure

time seems to slumber

in camera shots

too fast moving past

before fully absorbed

an erect neck now tired

of turning back with regret

high sun and heat

decreasing

petrol gauge as low horizon

never nearer not revealing

road ribbons to forever

our slumberous gazes

glazed with scenes

of shadows lit

by white-moon shafts

squinting at the yellow

twin-tunnelled path

flexing muscles cramped

shivering with want

the first new glimpse

of home

This morning,  IGameMom’s  blog, “Read Aloud with Children”   reminded me of when I started a youth theatre group in the early nineties – and why.

Although I’d been a founding member of another community theatre group for a few years, directing and turning my hand to wherever was needed, my daughter was a natural on stage and when given parts, did them so well adult actors resented her abilities and complained.  She wanted a ‘voice’, even if it meant acting and saying someone else’ words – she wanted the chance to stand up and be heard.

NYT_FrontCoverWEB_2.26921656_large

Recognizing a similar need in other teenagers, I started Northern Youth Theatre in 1992 to give them and particularly my 15 year old daughter, more chances to get involved with production on whatever level – and what fun we had!

After introducing ourselves in a welcome circle, sitting on the floor (all on the same level), the next task was reading scripts aloud.  I was stunned by how many members told me reading aloud was no longer required in schools!

After four solid years of performance and presentation, this is their ‘Swan Song’, a play called ‘The Rat Race’ with members between the ages of 12 – 18 years old taking all the roles and making the performance happen in 1996.  They came up with idea after our brainstorming sessions, 3 members Scott, Jess and Travis wrote the script.  All members were involved in the production, acted, directed and even filmed the three sold-out performances. As Artistic Director I was extremely proud of their efforts worthy – and as one adult audience member said; “Why don’t you enter this in the local awards?  It would win – it’s that good!”

I’ve always believed reading aloud is an invaluable tool all children should learn until it becomes second nature.  The skill to stand in front of others and confidently communicate clearly will take them far.

wilfred

I think I’ve mentioned before, how many years ago I was commissioned to adapt Mem Fox‘s book ‘Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge’  for performance in Joondalup Library.

The little ones loved getting into character and using the simple props I had brought along… perfecting using a walking stick, pretending to be old and grumpy etc.  I loved their invention and whole-hearted immersion into a story they already knew and loved so they could ‘live’ it – present it their own way.

It again, was all about giving them a voice and a platform to stand on.  To allow children to hold their head up high with shoulders back, to clearly and confidently say what they want to say.
