As a writer, I often Google or Bing my name “Frances Macaulay Forde” to see if there’s anything new I’m not aware of.

Nothing new, but I found a poem listed on the WAPoets website and 1st published in the Poets Union Inc. Anthology, 2006 “Sun and Sleet”.

Live Here On Sky

6th August 2005

A capsule of lighted hope lay in the deep black depths,
seven Russian submariners trapped on the Pacific floor.
Although “satisfactory” in their red striped white sub,
freeze as only hours of oxygen remain. Kursk memories

flood Moscow, but she pleads straight away for US
and UK Super Scorpios who help raise the vessel to rescue
depth – averting another disaster. But no one can help
the Discovery’s seven in their cocoon of light circling

our world in unending space. They wait in zero gravity,
remove foam chips, listen to Beatles and pray. The world held
a collective breath before touchdown as NASA remembered
the awesome, fiery power of Columbia’s broken tile.

MOBILES

Trendy shades that click to match.

Invisible.

Except for what looks like a hearing aid

turning us all into

business buskers barking at buildings.

And it’s natural to turn

when someone says ‘Hello’.

You even get a choice now.

Number display.

Answer or reject.

Interruptions.

(Blasted ‘Call Waiting’.)

Choose to ignore the insistent beeping

and inevitably

others can’t resist the burning question.

Favourite songs are ruined forever

by ringing interpretations.

Courtesy has gone out the window.

Lunch breaks deleted.

Performances interrupted.

Moving movie moments spoilt.

Availability questioned

by “This mobile is turned off”.

Country

take my hand
walk with me
through family

follow straight
railway lines
in the sunshine

leave hand prints
in caves sprayed
white sand hills

mountains of
red clay heart
brown beauty

take my hand
walk with me
through country

“I do remember being affected by words from a teacher who sat at my college’s French table. She said, basically (and in French) “being shy is worrying too much about what other people think of you. Shyness is a form of self-absorption.” It wasn’t pleasant to hear, because I am a shy person. Her view put a whole new spin on my feelings. It did a lot to force me out of my shyness.”

Paul O. Zelinsky has illustrated thirty-odd books for children, written some of them, and been awarded numerous honors, including the Caldecott Medal for Rapunzel and three Caldecott Honors.

Inspired by Social Bridge Re-BLOGGED post ‘Another Suitcase’  10th June 2015.

Without Wheels

Old-fashioned suitcases, the ones without wheels…

Such treasures themselves for the memories they held.

Skippered with no regard to a life-time of service,

disposed of – as I myself have been disposed of…

Perhaps a keen eye will fall over the rubbish bin’s wall

and take you home, give you a new life, if only

as under-bed storage.  Or repainted in bright colours

to hold precious memories – like I did.  Not wanting

the finality of ‘throwing away’ mum and dad, two

well-worn suitcases proudly sit in our lounge now

re-vamped, with children’s toys sharing in a new life

through the lives of my precious grand-children,

seeing their excited faces every time they lift the lid

to sort through and grab some treasure of their own.

The painted, brightly coloured hearts will never fade.

So I’m sharing one of my clever brother’s excellent short observations of nature – and some of his very chilled out music on Soundcloud.

Edith Cowan House

Peter Cowan Writers Centre, ECU Joondalup Campus, Western Australia

As an original, contributing committee member in those early years, I will happily join the High Tea celebrations at Peter Cowan Writers Centre, the only community writing centre based on a University Campus in Australia (and maybe anywhere), tomorrow.

In the beginning, I represented Theatre and Writing on the City of Wanneroo (later Joondalup) Cultural Advisory Committee, when the opportunity to place Peter Cowan’s House on the Edith Cowan University Campus was first mooted.

At the time, I was studying for my BA in Creative Writing at ECU, Mt Lawley campus and, although an enthusiastic member of the Fellowship of Australian Writers in WA, worried many times if my old bomb of a car would make it all the way down to Cottesloe for meetings.

A fellow student, Trudy Graham, as part of her Community Writing unit, started Northern Writers which in 1998, became the Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre Inc in honour of Peter Cowan, an esteemed Western Australian writer and academic.

My story about that very first Northern Writers meeting held in Warwick, was published in PCWC’s first anthology ‘Urban Scrawl’.  Although the names have been changed – you know who you are!

The proposal to place the historical home on Joondalup campus was brought up in a meeting of the Cultural Advisory Committee; ECU Students were dismantling the former home of Edith Cowan, Peter’s grandmother and Western Australia’s first female member of parliament in 1921.

Using Trudy’s Northern Writers membership numbers I was able to demonstrate a need and thankfully committee allowed the use (initially part) of the house as their ‘home’.

The City of Wanneroo Cultural Advisory Committee immediately set up a sub-committee to oversee the (significant) house move by students under University supervision, and invited Literature Prof. Andrew Taylor and Assoc. Prof. Glen Phillips from ECU, to lend their considerable support.

Which they certainly, did over these many years, resulting in the thriving Community Writing Centre we see today.  A job well done.

Congratulations Trudy, for taking the initiative all those years ago and to everyone involved then or now.
