There’s this cute idea making the rounds on Instagram :

1. Where you met your partner,

2. Where they proposed

3. Where you said “I do”.

I’d love to participate but I don’t have a smart phone or Instagram account.

However, I will participate, as much as I can.

In 2008 I was asked to be the visiting poet for National Poetry Week.  My one-off visit was so popular, the school asked me to stay on for a few more weeks – the students enjoyed discovering poetry.

08ArtJoonTimesORSHS

I wrote this poem in class to demonstrate and encourage them to have a go too and was surprised how many actually got up to read the resulting words.

School Daze

words with a reason

We also opened a Poemhunters webpage so students could contribute  poetry with their teacher supervising.

There’s something about Perth people.  Although our beautiful sprawling city feels like a small town, our people think internationally.

So I wasn’t at all surprised to see my sister-in-law had unearthed another ‘treasure’  here in Perth – one I was familiar with through the romcom (one of my all-time favourites)  “Notting Hill” and that garden scene.

Like my sister-in-law, I am also intrigued to find out who ‘Rodd and Nicole 2002′  are or were.   So, I let my imagination fill in words:

Bench space…

Rodney. What makes you think I’d want a rotten wooden bench with tombstone writing on it?  Ewwww.  A scabby reminder of old people who sat together in some cold and miserable place in England, years ago?  And it must have cost thousands to get over here…. why didn’t you just go to Tiffany’s in King St?  You know I like new stuff… not crappy used things that no-one else wants anymore.  Really Rodney – get a life!

Where’s the romance in that, Nicole?

Who wants romance – bling’s the thing Rod.  I love it when you introduce me to your friends, like at ‘Muse’ the other night.  Everyone loved my outfit – I’m a Perry girl through and through!

I thought we had a ‘life’, together or were at least were building one.  You’re not just – and why were you smoking again?  Who was that bloke outside?  You could be pregnant…

Roddy, Roddy, Roddy, chill already.   Speaking of Alex – do you want to come watch me try on my Perth Cup outfit?  I have to order early… he’s making it in blue, to match my eyes.  Perhaps we could visit Tiffany’s again, something Sapphire-ish?

Nicole, we don’t seem to be on the same page – if we ever were.  Did I tell you, I bumped into an old friend?  Her name is Alex too…

About the preggers thing, Roddy… I got the injection when I went to the doc about a boob job.

You don’t need one!

It’s my body! Just increase my card limit and I’ll surprise you one day, hey?

Yes, about the card.  I’ve cancelled it.

What?  Did you get me another one?  American Express is better, I’ve heard.

Alex is a lawyer.  We met at UWA.  Did I tell you…

My bum’s numb from this friggin’ bench.  Can we go back to the hotel now?

I wanted you to see what I’d done with it – wanted to let other people enjoy it, feel the romance, like I did.

Great idea, Roddy.  Can we go now?

Go where, Nicole?  You won’t even give me bench space…

© Daily Mail Article 2014

I’m drooling over this Daily Mail article about Elizabeth Taylor‘s jewels.  Not just the perfectly matched natural stones (I don’t often see totally natural, they’re usually enhanced or created in my world) but also the artistry of the settings.

“Revealed in all its glittering glory: Elizabeth Taylor’s £100m collection of gems, gowns and art goes on display at Christie’s” according to the Daily Mail article today.

I shouldn’t be envious. It’s her beauty (even in her later years) and how she effortlessly engendered love. So much love, her suitors wanted to – not just adore her but adorn her, with precious gems. I’d LOVE to see the exhibition…

Oh, I know it’s decadent, frivolous – selfish to harbor materials which, selling just one could earn enough to feed a small country, but looking at pretty, shiny things makes me so happy!

They say a man who buys jewelry is rare… I have one and a great love.  I know which I value more.

Lesson No 65

See, diamonds are hard

as everyone knows,

a girl must have metal

for this century’s woes.

Getting her rocks off

whether blond, red or brunette

no faking, no waiting – Helen,

woman hasn’t peaked yet.

While gentlemen play with image

cream blondes, brunettes achieve.

Red wears stainless steel bands

inscribed with ‘We must believe!’

Don’t strive for tabloid wants

look past the surface bling,

there’s more to a woman

tho’ the sparkle is tempting…

People think I’m an extrovert because it’s hard to get me out of my ‘bat cave’.

According to the latest TED Talk by Susan Cain , the world needs introverts but works hard to turn us all into extroverts.

I’ve added her book “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” to my wish list.

May I recommend you spend just 19 minutes listening to this lady…

Speak Softly

I think I’m an ‘ambivert’ because solutions matter

but the spotlight is necessary to share my revelations.

Take me back to a Culture of Characters, not Personality

and I will fit in again, feel like I can take time to myself,

create in silence and only, when I’m ready, reveal all.

141104MelbCupJUDE2

My daughter Jessica McCallum was commissioned to design and make a one-off head piece for her friend Judith in Melbourne – which arrived just in time!

141104MelbCupJUDE1141104MelbCupJUDE

Judith (aka The Adventures of a Voucher Vixen) agreed to the use her photos showing how happy she was with her hat – and just how gorgeous she and the dashing Alister looked!

For all readers who aren’t Australian, yesterday was the day of the great race – the Melbourne Cup.

It’s a day when if they can’t get the day off work, many take a ‘sickie’.  Businesses organize lunches with Sweepstakes, Best Hat or Outfits and a bit of a ‘flutter’ at the TAB, champagne flows with nibbles and no work.  So I don’t understand why it isn’t a Public Holiday!

As is our usual habit, each year, my sister-in-law organised a table at a local Tavern for lunch and a bit of a flutter – the only time I ever gamble.  We enjoyed free champagne, live music, sweepstakes and a delicious lunch all wearing the appropriate head-wear, while judging everyone else’s.

??????????

Jessica’s 40’s style original.

My daughter wore one of her own designs and our friend Ann made her own version with mementos and gift ribbons.  The lady from the next table was so impressed she urged Ann to stand up and be judged for the ‘Best Hat’ competition.

Definitely the loudest table, No 32 behind us, kept booing winners and shouting their’s was the best hat etc started to upset the judge.  He sarcastically offered a prize for the best personality (if they’d just shut up and let him get on) but it didn’t deter them!

??????????

Ann’s ‘gift’ hat.

The BEST HAT winners were two ladies wearing their primary school daughter’s efforts; both wide sweeping paper brims with color splashed all over and a guy with a ridiculous crocheted bean-ey with plaits in his football team colours.  The competition obviously judged on the most novel…  AND they gave No 32 a bottle of booze anyway!

It was lovely to see so many ladies dressed up to the nines, gorgeous frocks and hats and even men in suits.  Though I have to say I was a little disappointed that some men came too casually dressed for their partners.

The race was exciting and my niece Ashleigh, newly arrived from Canada that morning, won 1st prize in the sweepstakes with the winner “Protectionist”.

Unfortunately, while checking out my photos later, I learned two horses died after the race.  The favorite led most of the way until he hit trouble toward the end of the race. finishing well behind the others.  He collapsed and died when taken back to his stall.  The other horse was spooked by an excited spectator and crashed into a barrier, breaking a leg and had to be euthanaised.  So sad.

Suddenly, the whole idea of horse racing took on dark and malevolent overtones.   Animal Rights people have now made me rethink the day…

“Buy experience, not things.”

Today, Zambia is celebrating 50 years of independence – 24th October 2014 and I can’t help singing to myself – her 1st President Kenneth Kaunda’s signature song: Tiyende Pamodzi :   “Let’s go together in harmony.”

1962KitweGirlsTennisTeam

I’m still torn between my idyllic childhood in the center of Africa, Northern Rhodesia now Zambia and Perth, Western Australia where I’ve been ever since leaving ‘home’.

elesmana_dickpitman

Mana Pools, Zambezi River.

They say, once you’ve crossed the mighty Zambezi River  you’ll always return. I haven’t yet. I keep in ‘touch’ though, with many friends who have or who also miss ‘home’ and enjoy sharing wonderful memories.

Lowdown Magazine is written by Heather Chalcraft who takes amazing photos of Zambia now.  This is the Flamboyant or Flame Tree, the sight of which takes me back to Kitwe and Lusaka as quickly as Jacarandas do.

In fact, my man and I reunited on the Great North Road website after 28 years and have been married for 10, so I owe Zambia a great debt for a wonderful childhood, fantastic memories and now, my happiness.

Tiyende Pamodzi…

Your 50 Zambian years means I am 50 years older.

I was at school when you became independent

but your Independence triggered my own at 14.

Not wanting to repeat a year I had just finished,

I refused and found myself a job, instead. My

idyllic childhood safe in Mother Africa’s arms

meant we learnt young to be strong, resilient

finding our own way through the jungle.  Confident,

courageous and convinced of our immortality.

I blossomed in your sunshine and freedoms.

As pioneers we knew we could turn our hands

to whatever was required to get the job done.

And we did.  During the struggles, shortages

were a given but ever resourceful we shared,

surviving together.  The best lesson for life.

(Photo from RENEGADE LINEDANCERS website.)

We watched  RENEGADE LINEDANCERS  do a display at at the Great British Car Show in GIN GIN, earlier this year.

So following on from my  Red Hat Society  post,  I did a little search and found it’s no longer called BOOT SCOOTIN’.

Now called (no pun intended)  LINE DANCING  I was very pleasantly surprised to find it’s still really popular with many groups,  both North and South of the Swan River!

My local group is called “Dancin’ Fillies” and I had to smile – can’t see me ever taking part even though it’s just ’round the corner…

Also listed are  Apache Rebels,  Lonestar Dance in Beechboro,  and True Blue Bootscooters in Wangara.

NULINE have come up with a line dance to “LET IT GO!” which is bound to be really popular.

I know my Frozen Obsessed little grand-daughter will LOVE dancing it – the young lad dancing his heart out in the front row certainly does!

I loved the Bootscootin’ version of FOOTLOOSE and the WEDDING DANCE...

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS  for you to do in the privacy of your own home, although ‘Adria’ is a little scary – Ha Ha!

More instructions, this time for the TUSH PUSH with a reminder that dancing is good for your health!

COPPER HEAD ROAD, the best WILD COUNTRY dance and a fun version of COTTON EYE  JOE  (I had to watch a few times because this girl with such a beautiful unexpected accent).

So, if you managed to get all the way through that lot, here’s your REWARD: PURE EYE CANDY.
