Midleton McDaid's 2 DS

McDaid’s Folk Club

We carefully stepped through

the seated crowd, she smiled

in surprised delight and

pulled you down

to whisper invitingly.

I watched the young guitarist finger-pick,

thought about her possessive

hand placed on

your willing arm

and felt sick.

Is this the end of Faith?

(11.11 am   7th March 2003)

amongst the threats

(no regrets)

Mesopotamia’s verdant fields

about to be trodden by US heels…

a break from balletic visuals

three second take-off’s

while Kitty Hawk

danced on the waves

below

‘Adam Faith has died

at the age of 62’

after stage performance

a heart attack

such a trooper

parading…

performing…

???????????????????????????????

Bead-work is intimate,

novel-like in the detail

– the chase a known pattern.

Crochet hooks the reader,

burrows through cotton/wool.

Knitting thrusts and parries.

Everything to do with

the size of the needle

and how it’s manipulated.

Since the net has been playing up, I’ve had time to do all sorts of things, pick up a pencil to draw or read books – such a luxury.

One of the first I’ve chosen is  ‘Walking Here’ by my friend Jessie Lendennie, of Salmon Poetry and THE best bookshop in Ireland, fame.  I’m enjoying it so much and couldn’t resist sharing one of her poems with you.

141030JesieWalkingHereDOC

Jessie and her family are mourning the recent loss of two of her beloved ‘pack’ but I know they still run to that rock pool, whenever she goes walking around the amazing Cliffs of Moher.

Irish Lourdes
Where it is said ‘Our Lady appeared ‘ to Knock faithful,
enterprising vendors parade their wares on sidewalks.
You’ll find a large range of rosary beads
hanging in silent prayer – necklaces of every hue
to match any outfit you choose – posing for photos.
.

1 hour processing while you worship, Extra film,
Holy Water Bottles in the shape of Mary,
small enough to send home with the postcard
or buy a granite headstone for Father, Son,
ready-carved – off the rack, just in case

.
for those times when you are caught unawares…
Plastic floral wreathes, colour matched, some
have see-through domes to protect or preserve,
all kinds of religious mugs, pens, cups, mouse mats…
the soul wonders as eyes boggle in Knock shops.

Carol's Cross - Paudie LS

Left Field

Lined up like the Waterford cows,

metal bodies glitter in an Irish field.

Their black rubber circles squelch

acres of reconstituted bovine cud.

A Friesian audience has gathered

to ruminate on two-legged animals

with red and white coats, running

and hurling a stone to each other

between showers, near Carol’s Cross.

Newness of things:

the greenness – the blueness – the

colours of Spring.

Hyde Park is showing it’s best leafy coat thanks to our recent rains.  My sister in law Grace, took some inspiring photos for her blog (above) on Saturday in one of two beautiful parks found within our city environs.

Thanks to Perth planners all those years ago, we can wander down paths next to bubbling water aerated by fountains, reminding me of wandering next to the Lough in Cork City.

Although we have mainly Black Swans here, I enjoyed seeing many white swans and other water birds, there.

swans float above their

watery stage.

Written in response to an article in the Irish Examiner, 9th May 2003.

Front Page Impact

Was it right to show all those bodies

in make-shift coffins, lined up like

so many bargains at a boot sale?

What’s happened to our humanity

when thirty-three elderly people die

and the focus is on the ‘exciting’ visuals

of a train hitting a bus  – slicing it in half,

reveling in the mangled mess?  I said

the same about recent war coverage.

Am I the only one who cringes, every time

I see pain and suffering celebrated without

thought of the mother, father, brother, friend.

Or the lover, who may chance to see a half-clothed,

disguarded pile of damaged meat and bones,

and suddenly recognize a shirt or scarf or shoe…

??????????

My friend Jessie Lendennie, poet and  Salmon Poetry  publisher extraordinaire loves dogs so much, she called on poetic friends to send their poems about dogs for a tribute anthology;  “Dogs Singing”.

The result is a book I keep on my desk to savor, to delve into, every now an then.

I still miss my own faithful Butchy – often feel him pacing outside the back door and fancy I catch a glimpse of him checking the garden, as I hang the washing.

This poem by Desmond Gough is simply called “Zach” appears on page 61 of 417 pages.

This is an example of why I look forward to receiving my copy of the latest  Crannog Magazine.  I also submit short stories and poetry, hoping one day to find a piece of my own nestled between the gems I enjoy in each issue.

It’s inspiring to discover new (to me) writers.  I am now a fan of Maggie Breen and will have to add “Other Things I Didn’t Tell” to my wish list
