Cows in Barryscourt 2

You Stare At Me

you stare at me

benevolent eye

knowing why

I am here

what I will do

to you

wear your skin

drink you dry

pasteurise   cream

strain and grain

make holes in

blue and vein

you stare at me

benevolent eye

knowing why

I am here

what I will do

to you

slice and dice

grind your bones

roast and fry

muscle for burgers

liver for onions

kidney for pies

and that eye

that eye

that eye

a delicacy!

Calvary-Poster

Today we saw  ‘Calvary’the second in a trilogy of stories masterfully written and superbly directed by John Michael McDonagh   The first was ‘The Guard’   which is the highest grossing Irish film of all time!

Both films starred the empirical Brendon Gleeson who has no less than 6 more films in production at the moment and one already completed since ‘Calvary’.  And no wonder – I cannot imagine an Irish film without him now…  but each of the cast fitted their characters perfectly – another film I could not fault.

The story is confronting, full of black humor, lovely Irish accents and scenery beautifully shot around Sligo and Easkey – places my husband took me to because his mother came from there.

If it’s showing where you are, make the effort – it’s a refreshingly different take on some taboo subjects tackled with wry wit and a large dose of ‘reality’.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything  David and Margret had to say, and think this film will break the ‘highest earnings’ record too.

CRANNOG Spring 2014 Journal

A free subscription was included with entry into their competition, so I’ve just received my copy of  ‘CRANNOG Spring 2014’.

Wish I’d read it before entering…    The book feels slim but the 88 page volume is packed with clever writing.

The Galway editorial board did a superb job of choosing short stories and poems which affect the reader – and they did.

Like “Worship”  by Ruth Quinlan:  Your white shoes aren’t white at all.  They’re just cream pretending to be white and when you hold them against the Communion dress they look old and discoloured  even though you know they’re new.

The words put put me right into the moment of my own Holy Communion (which I haven’t thought about since) remembering the crisp feel of new material and the smell of polished shoes.  Wonderful writing.

Or Breda Wall Ryan’s  “Crushie” poem:  The rain has stopped. Sunlight/veneers a table set between windows. /The year turns.

The journal CRANNOG Spring 2014  is available for Kindle fans or surprisingly cheaper as a printed version.

Certainly well worth the few dollars to enjoy such gifted authors.
