It seems to have been a very musical morning for me so far, the first email I opened today was from my very talented brother:  FordeDotPaddy

“Morning Mist” is his latest…

Then someone in my 12 x 12 Challenge put me onto this blog :  “Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast

It is an amazing find for picture book writers and illustrators,  so if you are one, I recommend you take a look.

But I absolutely loved the music tagged onto the end of the post, about my all-time favorite band…

A day off – yayyyyy!

Yesterday was a working day up in the hills of Perth and it was cold!  (Well cold for us – about 10 degrees C when we got there but the wind was freezing!)  I had four layers on and wished I’d added my leg-warmers too.  The sun never really got through the clouds so although the temperature rose to 20 C it felt a lot colder until the wind died down.

I’m moaning because the day before was beautiful, sunny and warm after many days of rain; a glorious Summer day in the middle of our winter – at least 25 degrees.

Anyhow, we rushed home to get ready after work because last night we were due to see my brother-in-law perform with Vocal Evolution, 2013 Australian Mens Harmony Chorus Champions – Woo Hoo!

What a great show!  Certainly brightened up our day and naturally, we’re very proud.

If you’ve never been to a show, get down to their next one – these guys have amazing voices and do a fantastic job of entertaining with gusto.

Last night Vocal Evolution mixed it up with ‘TLA’ and ‘Lock Out’ Barbershop Quartets and the band  ‘Alcatraz’ .

Amongst others, their amazing singer Bindhu  sang this song  then belted out an Adelle song as if it was soooooooooo easy!

A great night of fabulous voices – thanks Vocal Evolution!

When I was a teenager in Africa (mid-sixties) I don’t know why but our house – more specifically, our front lawn was the meeting place…

Our crowd used to sit in a circle, singing songs until Mum came out and reminded us we had neighbors.

We sang songs by James Taylor; Bread; Simon & Garfunkle; Joan Baez; Mamas & the Papas; Joni Mitchell; Peter, Paul & Mary…

Everywhere I lived I could always find a folk club except when I moved up to the Northern Suburbs in 1985.

So, ever resourceful, I put an ad in the local community paper and the Wanneroo Folk Club was born.

Years later, it’s still going strong although, I must admit I haven’t been for years – next one’s in June (Friday 13th).  Maybe we’ll see you there!

However in 1984, I did make my first 16 mm film about the Hills Folk Club in Kalamunda.  If you have 6 minutes to spare and want an 80’s hair reminder, watch my doco ‘Some Folks Folk’.

Last night hubby and I went to a Monday Supper Club  at the Dome Cafe in Maylands, to hear my friend Glen Phillips  &  John Ryan  read their poetry.

The food was good and music provided firstly by (organiser) Jane Cornes’ Trio then by the outstanding Ken Nicols  formally of  Steeleye Span.

Must admit the night brought out the inner Folk-ie in me once again…

My very clever brother has written some more music to his  videos of  Kangaroos Boxing  in the early morning,  taken at a nearby park and blogged on  Perth Daily Photo.

Western Australia has preserved ‘green belts’ so kangaroos (and other fauna) can roam from one feeding ground to another.

Those areas usually include a lake, providing natural habitats for our native flora and fauna – particularly in my region near Yellagonga Regional Park.  (Also the subject of a Picture Book I’m working on.)

We’re used to seeing kangaroos around but know not to go near as they are deceptively cute and can be very dangerous.

Those strong back legs are used to rip open the stomach of their opponent while they rest on that ‘third leg’ – their extremely strong tail!

Driving from the city, just before turning off the freeway for home at sunset, we often see a ‘mob’ feeding near the access tracks on the left.

While studying at University I sometimes attended lectures at our local ECU campus here in Joondalup which also was regularly visited by a local ‘mob’.

‘Sleepy’ Perth has been awoken by the presence of the mighty Rolling Stones although sadly their first Australian concert for many years has to be postponed.

My heart goes out to Mick and all who loved and knew his best friend, L’Wren Scott.

While the band members deal with the change in plans, they’ve been forced to keep their tongue logo parked on the tarmac at Perth Airport.

Last night, drummer Charlie Watts found an outlet for his musical talents at one of our best known secrets; the Ellington Jazz Club.

I’ve very sure the capacity crowd of 135 will dine out on their impromptu concert for many years to come.

My niece Aimee has long been a fan of the club and although many of the family have enjoyed the Jazz, we’ve not got there yet.

Muther’s Convention playing in Zambia, 1971 – Hubby on the left.

So ex-musician hubby and I were discussing our misfortune in not choosing to go, when he told me about his two claims to fame; acting as local tour guides and helping ferry instruments etc when ‘The Casuals’ visited Zambia in about 1971 and his band ‘Muther’s Convention’ playing as support for ‘The Equals’ on their Zambian tour a year later.

I didn’t recognize the names immediately so good old Google came to the rescue and ‘Voila!’  I’m instantly transported with the sound of one of my all-time favorite songs “Jesamine”  by the Casuals.

So proud of my brother Paddy who’s just released his first album of original songs called “Avartarian Summer”

He’s also made a video with one of the soundtracks of our beautiful South West forest featuring one of our iconic birds, a Kookaburra!

Please let him know if you enjoy his sounds and pictures.
