For me, it doesn’t have to be the traditional red roses – or roses at all!

If I receive flowers today, I will be thrilled because I love them all but Valentine’s Day is not as hyped as it could be in Oz… and I’m lucky to have a man in my life who just enjoys buying flowers to surprise me.

But, the reason my husband and I will make a point of getting each other a card today, is because he blind-sided me by declaring his intentions on Valentine’s Day in 2002.

At the time I was just pleased to make contact with an old boyfriend from 28 years before, never suspecting or looking or even wanting that relationship again.  We’d both well and truly moved on in our lives – there were continents between us.

Boy, did that all change – and I couldn’t be happier!

When I wrote this poem for a friend’s wedding, I was obviously talking about my beautiful man…

I hope you’ve got someone in your life who you love as deeply.

Phonecall

I don’t believe

in forever

anymore.

I know

you don’t have

room in your life

for love

or me.

But friendship

is a two-way street.

I needed

to know

that somebody

cared…

that you cared.

I guess I dialled

the wrong number.

When I was younger with two little ones, I was right into cooking and housekeeping.

Now – not so much.

If what needs to be gets done, gets done – great.

Otherwise, I know it will still be there later.

Cooking these days, is more about convenience.

So although I don’t usually do this, hey, it’s a great idea:  breakfast, lunch or dinner – in a mug!

A Delicious Dance

In my kitchen

I contemplate a new mix,

a special combination

with heightened flavors.

The perfected recipe.

At last, a chance

to bite into real love!

The thrill of discovery

I’ve tried unsuccessfully

to master, for years.

Many times before,

I tried blending,

picking ingredients

so carefully…

impatiently

stirring the pot.

But I wrongly used

wooden utensils –

failed to find

the perfect dish,

until you added

that extra dash.

That Mysterious tang

which previously

eluded my search –

that ultimate formula.

Tempting my taste buds,

leaving them bereft

of that special essence,

everlasting love.

You are the recipe

and lust the icing

on my now perfected

carrot cake of life.

0911Zambian Sunset

I’ve probably posted this from my 1968 Notebook before but I’m remembering (and wishing for) the pool we had in our Kitwe backyard.

African Sky

heat of the day

cool of the night

clear blue sky

such a beautiful sight

trees so green

(greener than I’ve seen)

earth rich and brown

rain pouring down

to make the hour cool

like diving in the pool

when the heat gets you down

then the coolness of night

with stars shining bright

but before they appear

comes the scene held so dear

there’s no more exquisite sight

than day changing to night

and the reds and the golds

which appear in the folds

of the African sky

when night is nigh

Red

Hidden_Capacity_1

Jessica McCallum © 2003

RED is supposed to be

fiery tempered

liable to catch alight

at any time, smouldering

heat – just waiting

to ignite – right?

That’s on the outside…

Her surface simmers

but inside she’s easily hurt,

has no confidence and

feels fat when she isn’t.

She just wants to be

loved for who she is.

Wants someone to see

past her red hair and

the stereo-typing.

An old map of Zambia.

Journey from Victoria Falls to the Copperbelt.

They say that once you’ve crossed the Zambezi, you’ll always return.

You’ll come back to this country, for its beauty you’ll yearn.

How many times has that theory been proven so true,

we’ve said goodbye to our friends, packed up and left you.

Only to come back in a few years time, to the river,

winding  its way through this country so fine.

The Victoria Falls with enormous gorges,

rushing water as if from a thousand rivers,

rainbow of colours, the noise of the falls,

the excitement of watching those solid water walls.

Cruising down river on boats with game guards,

watching for hippos or crocs in their paths.

Sunsets on Lake Kariba as birds all rise

over game that runs free on either side

of a lake that’s so big it has waves like a sea…

Sundowners on the terrace looking over the water,

watching the sun’s death at seven and a quarter…

Driving through the escarpment, that range of hills forming a border

between two countries, a vital road link that’s little-used now

as they quarrel over things that don’t matter somehow.

Bowling along the road to Lusaka and the Copperbelt.

Across the Zambezi again, while the heat melts.

Arrive in Lusaka at lunchtime to see

the streams of traffic in that busy city,

then on through the maise fields and sugar cane,

up to Kabwe where it’s stacked ready for the trains.

A long empty stretch and you reach Kapiri

– if you blink a lot, you’ll miss it completely.

Straight flat roads to drive ‘til you’re bored.

The turn-off at Fisenge to get on the right road

and you’re on your way to Kitwe and the Rhokana Mine

– the Hub of the Copperbelt and a town that’s fine.

One of the largest and best-equipped mines around

where they hurl the copper-bearing ore up from the ground.

Under the surface, the tunnels are huge

– all white tiled and sparkling – nothing crude.

Perfectly safe for all the workers below,

stepping into the cages as they go,

down in the depths to seek the country’s life-blood.

Working long hours earning money to buy food

for their many children and wives,

who’ve gone without for most of their lives.

Now wages are better – conditions more fair,

good health and happiness no longer so rare.

Neat houses and gardens well-tended line the streets.

Lots of shady park benches where gossipers meet.

A way of life that can’t be compared; peace

and quiet, beauty in the sunshine, fresh air…

Days to laze and lots of time to contemplate

how good life can be, before it’s too late.

Relax, while you’re young, enjoy the sunshine and happiness of home

surrounded by friends you’re never alone.

Make a point of crossing our Zambezi River  sometime

– take a long, long holiday – come see this fabulous country of mine!

Making Up

Are we all clowns, underneath?

With faces painted, emotions

cleverly masked, windows

of the soul… concealed?

When make-up is removed

Will it wash away fears,

finally reveal thoughts,

make us naked?

Or tattoo a memory

of past love in pain

punishing or celebrating

that which shapes us.

Perhaps still clothe ourselves

In past experiences

keeping them close

to our hearts?

…and what colour should love be

on the face we show the world?

Is fear the white make-up base?

Do Blue Brows give early warnings

above our windows of the soul,

predict a cautious tale of woe?

The vehicle of words which wound

wears lipstick red – do they reveal

blood spilt in misunderstanding?

Are we all clowns, underneath?

With faces painted, emotions

cleverly masked, windows

of the soul… concealed?

painting-by-vincent-romero-madrid-1956

Vincente Romero © 2007-2009

As I’m focused on picture books for children through my 12 x 12  challenge, I’ve also just enrolled in a class on The Art of the Picture Book illustration class with Shadra Strickland.

(Of course, I could never be as good as Vincente Romaro who’s paintings I’ve just discovered!)

So for a ‘tester’ project, I’m going to use a poem I wrote many years ago (and I mean many) in the early 60’s called “The Prima Ballerina”.

I hope to show you how I adapt it to a PB and slowly, how I have a go at illustrating it too…

The Prima Ballerina

She lives in a world of fairy tales,

all fantasy, happiness and woe.

Floating across the stage in tulle,

fine silk or organza.,

softly pirouettes through the mist,

or dies upon the snow.

This is the world of Ballet

of the Prima Ballerina.

So lithe and slim, so beautiful,

so graceful and serene.

On stage, supremely untouchable

yet so frail behind the scenes.

She’s the Queen of the ‘Corps de Ballet’,

the star with the golden feet,

dancing her way through ‘Petruska’,

‘Swan Lake’ or the ‘Nutcracker Suite’.

The audience, transfixed with awe,

watch silently, as in a dream,

for gripped by suspense and beauty

 – such as they’ve never seen!

They observe the scenery so real,

the superbly made costumes,

but their eyes are fixed on the ‘Bluebird’

and all it’s fine blue plumes.

And when the ballet is done,

And encore after encore taken.

And baskets and bouquets

of flowers dispensed….

There’s a feeling of despair and longing

at the end of such unforgettable enchantment.

Speak Up

It takes more than placement to tell a story.

More than illustration or clever juxtaposition

to speak to our children.  The voice of our words

connects while young eyes search for meaning,

only then are hearts able to hear our stories.

Mum&RosesKitweCU

Mum, Amazon Crescent, Kitwe, Zambia, 1972.

Today would have been my dear old Mum’s 84th birthday.  I wish I could give her a hug, like I do in my dreams.  It’s also the anniversary of my husband first finding my name on the net in 2002 (after 28 years apart) then that hug and a promise to explore the possibilities of love, again.

I think it was Mum’s way of hugging me… bringing my love back to me.

30802SuePaudieLargeScan

Taken in 2002, the day after he flew to Perth from Ireland via South Africa, to hug me.

My Knight

In the afternoon of my life,

settled,

content and comfortable

in my alone-ness

you question me!

You destroy

my strong defenses,

obliterate

my sense and reason

to let you in!

For my heart,

bow wave of confusion,

tense terror times

of doubt and fear

~ unknown ~

risk everything,

my ordered now!

The colours of my life

changing to a

different hue…

You terrify me!

Wanting – needing

arms that enclose

a broken heart…

Make it whole again!
