As a writer, I often Google or Bing my name “Frances Macaulay Forde” to see if there’s anything new I’m not aware of.

Nothing new, but I found a poem listed on the WAPoets website and 1st published in the Poets Union Inc. Anthology, 2006 “Sun and Sleet”.

Live Here On Sky

6th August 2005

A capsule of lighted hope lay in the deep black depths,
seven Russian submariners trapped on the Pacific floor.
Although “satisfactory” in their red striped white sub,
freeze as only hours of oxygen remain. Kursk memories

flood Moscow, but she pleads straight away for US
and UK Super Scorpios who help raise the vessel to rescue
depth – averting another disaster. But no one can help
the Discovery’s seven in their cocoon of light circling

our world in unending space. They wait in zero gravity,
remove foam chips, listen to Beatles and pray. The world held
a collective breath before touchdown as NASA remembered
the awesome, fiery power of Columbia’s broken tile.

Edith Cowan House

Peter Cowan Writers Centre, ECU Joondalup Campus, Western Australia

As an original, contributing committee member in those early years, I will happily join the High Tea celebrations at Peter Cowan Writers Centre, the only community writing centre based on a University Campus in Australia (and maybe anywhere), tomorrow.

In the beginning, I represented Theatre and Writing on the City of Wanneroo (later Joondalup) Cultural Advisory Committee, when the opportunity to place Peter Cowan’s House on the Edith Cowan University Campus was first mooted.

At the time, I was studying for my BA in Creative Writing at ECU, Mt Lawley campus and, although an enthusiastic member of the Fellowship of Australian Writers in WA, worried many times if my old bomb of a car would make it all the way down to Cottesloe for meetings.

A fellow student, Trudy Graham, as part of her Community Writing unit, started Northern Writers which in 1998, became the Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre Inc in honour of Peter Cowan, an esteemed Western Australian writer and academic.

My story about that very first Northern Writers meeting held in Warwick, was published in PCWC’s first anthology ‘Urban Scrawl’.  Although the names have been changed – you know who you are!

2000UrbanScrawlStory

The proposal to place the historical home on Joondalup campus was brought up in a meeting of the Cultural Advisory Committee; ECU Students were dismantling the former home of Edith Cowan, Peter’s grandmother and Western Australia’s first female member of parliament in 1921.

Using Trudy’s Northern Writers membership numbers I was able to demonstrate a need and thankfully committee allowed the use (initially part) of the house as their ‘home’.

The City of Wanneroo Cultural Advisory Committee immediately set up a sub-committee to oversee the (significant) house move by students under University supervision, and invited Literature Prof. Andrew Taylor and Assoc. Prof. Glen Phillips from ECU, to lend their considerable support.

Which they certainly, did over these many years, resulting in the thriving Community Writing Centre we see today.  A job well done.

Congratulations Trudy, for taking the initiative all those years ago and to everyone involved then or now.

When I met 90 year old Tom, he was a West Australian Living Treasure and an absolute gentleman.

Also the winner of the Patrick White Award in 1992, Tom was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1988 for services to literature, the author of many novels, including The Ridge and The River, Sowers of the Wind, Swagbelly, Birdsnatcher and The Prince of Siam.

He’d been writing for 60 years and celebrated his 90th birthday with a collection of stories & poems which illustrated his life.

At the official launch, I sat in selfish wonder listening to the magnificent voice of Jack Thompson booming, blasting passion into the masterly poetry and prose of T.A.G. Hungerford’s new book.

Taken from the back cover of  What’s Happened to Joseph?:  “With dazzling ease he moves from prose to poetry, from the ancient past to the present, from the small, absorbing passions of suburbia to the grim demands of jungle warfare. Hungerford makes us wonder just what did happen to Joseph, farther of Jesus Christ- did he continue to work in his carpenters trade, perhaps in Jerusalem – then takes us to the heart of Anzac Day, to the shimmering colours of outback Australia, or to his own front garden, and with every word he illuminates our own experience.”

I loved every word of his book and want everyone to enjoy his insight, his sensitivity and his ability to place me right there, where he was when writing them.

‘ANZAC Day’ is a poem I believe would work well on screen; the opening lines; dense, establishing and heartfelt:

“This spot at the corner of Pier Street and the Terrace

between two churches – Presbyterian one side,

C. of E. on the other – is just made to order

for us Second Eighth blokes to form up for the March

this mild April morning.  Wild men we were, all of us.”

When Tom allowed me to host ‘An Afternoon With Tom’ during a very special Poet’s Corner event, devoted entirely to him, the place was packed with lovers of words wanting to hear him read and provide further insight to his writing.

The last poem in his book; ‘Fascination Waltz’ is another favorite and made me cry.  That’s why I asked Kevin Gillam, a fellow poet, admirer of Tom and professional cellist to play ‘Fascination’.  I felt the love and saw a tear in Tom’s eye, too.

Although he’s gone now I still think of him and his words, often. I treasure the firstly hand-written, then typed letters we exchanged and an (as far as I know) unpublished poem “Grey Ghost”, which would also make a fantastic film.

I want to pay a larger tribute and help make his writings available to more by getting them up on the big screen. Any producers out there, interested?

???????????????????????????????

Being introduced at the Avon Valley Writers Festival, 2012.

Talk about booking well in advance: the West Australian branch of the Society of Women Writers asked me at the beginning of the year, to run a workshop ‘Writing for the Screen’ in October.

I’m told they expect around 60 people to attend the General Meeting and stay for my presentation – so I’m looking forward to the challenge.  🙂

Well used to presenting to an audience either in person, on a stage or on screen, I’m not really worried about showing a short film made from my script then talking about my experience.

???????????????????????????????

Some of the audience for my Avon Valley Writers Festival workshop having a go at a one pager, 2012.

The intention is to also get them to have a go at a one pager, then pick a couple to read out and critique. A similar workshop during the inaugural Avon Valley Writers Festival in 2012 was very successful.

So if you’re around on the 20th October – a Wednesday lunchtime and are interested getting an IDEA – because it’s a HUGE subject, of writing for the screen… why not book your place now by contacting the WA branch of the Society of Women’s Writers.

Raffles Hotel, Singapore, 2002

In honor of today’s re-blog from Damyanti in Singapore (a place I love to visit), I thought I’d share a couple of poems written during a workshop on Chinese Poetry at the Peter Cowan Writers Centre run by a fellow poet and old friend Helen Hagemann, in 2001.

1.

Spiked fir branches moving.

Dance together as one.  When

intruder breezes

stirring the pot of Heaven

renew Earth’s green mountain skin.

2.

Fire clings to plastic

devouring coloured hues.

Melts all pretence down,

slides it away from view

to reveal bones bare of truth.

cover-crop

This should be an interesting read.

Although the paperback is available, I’ve just purchased the Kindle version of  Remnants of Empire  ~ Memory and Northern Rhodesia’s white diaspora by Pamela Shurmer-Smith.

The hard copy was published to coincide with the recent ’50 years of Independence’ celebrations but I have far too many books on my shelves, so this time, Kindle will do.

I absolutely agree about the metal Baobab tree design, as explained in Pamela’s cover notes.

There’s also an interesting music video by Pamela’s very talented musician son, which brought back many memories of my childhood.

Sligo, Ireland 2003.

Red Lipstick.

Standing in reverence of a mighty giant

his Nobel words remembered, this fan notes

exaggerated bat-like shoulders enhance his

thoughtful gaze – watching the Horseman?

Others have stepped up on Galway stone; held

those long, thin legs as they balance head bent

to leave a lipstick imprint of their awe for him

on the space his left hand nonchalantly indicates…

One of the most fun assignment I’ve ever had was for our largest Hospital’s Emergency Department in 2006.

Way before EK Chase (I’ve just discovered) seemed to adopt my idea for a One Direction song ;  I was commissioned to write a series of 30 second ads to be played on the in-house TVs.

They wanted to get boring facts ‘out there’ to resonate with the target audience of drug users and drunks who, when inebriated practiced dangerous habits – particularly the younger ones.

Well, I’ve worked with and written for teenagers quite a bit, so I guess I was a natural choice.

SYNOPSIS:

The first five 30 second advertisement scripts generally tell the story of Chlamydia using toys as characters in a party atmosphere at the dolls house, with soundtrack music provided by —–.

Hands obviously (in shot) hold the toys as they enact the scenes: going up or down stairs, break-dancing etc. Full-sized beer cans are scattered around the dolls house.

The humorous use of toys with full sized items should provide a comedic edge together with the further juxtapositioning of a serious message in between the seemingly frivolous.

I was paid well and applauded for what I gave them, however the production team didn’t meet their criteria so in the end, my scripts weren’t actually filmed.

All that effort wasn’t wasted – I know the ideas were adapted and used in various ways for workshops and conferences etc.

My “CHLAMYDIA RAP” dissolved the whole office of Medicos into stitches (pardon the pun) – and I still like it:

CHLAMYDIA RAP

Listen here! Y’all need to know
Chlam – ydd-ee-ah Trach – o –mat – is is
as common as ‘the clap’ is.
It’s spead by sex without a hat,
don’t even know when you’re got at
– s’real dangerous for bubs ‘n testies,
‘cos it’s sneaky ‘n snarly ‘n silent as
‘til your eyes go pink ‘n your bum goes red.
Before y’know it – you’re real sick in bed.
Just pee in a cup – then give it up.
We’ll tell you by text so no-one knows
–one shot anti-be, ‘n away you go.

Alan Iverson Credits.

Alan Iverson‘s website is quite impressive.  It clearly shows the projects he’s worked on, projects available for development and super easy to navigate.

I’ve read ‘Ghost Town’ and look forward to producers (it’s never just one these days) coming on board to develop the series, so I can say to Alan; “I knew you when…”.

If you’ve got a project you’d like Alan to work on with you, contact him through his website.  He’s a top bloke – a hard working and conscientious team player!
