PP Sue H

Were you ever naughty as a child?

Yes – of course but I could smile and charm my way out of any frown.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Anything that sparkles: smiles, sunlight and serious jewels.

Did you have a favorite teacher at school?

My French teacher was strict but always looked like a fashion model straight from Paris, with exquisite accessories.

Where do you most like to read?

Snuggled up in bed when it’s cold or on the patio when it’s not too hot, but I do most of my reading these days sitting in front of my computer in my study, surrounded by the written word!

Which childhood books stick in your mind?

The ‘Royal Book of Ballet’ by Shirley Goulden, illustrated by Maraja, published by Follett 1962. Stories of famous ballets; Nutcracker, Petrushka, Swan Lake, Copelia, Sleeping Beauty… then there’s also anything by Enid Blyton: Faraway Tree, Wishing Chair, Noddy etc etc.

Where are all the books in your house?

All around me in my study, in the lounge, family room, passage to the bedrooms, in my bedroom plus I have boxes in storage too!

Did you ever fail at anything? Or what are you hopeless/worst at?

Often!  I absolutely freeze at exams no matter how much I’ve studied and usually know the answers…   But I’m also very good at running away or hiding at the first sign of success.

My mother (or father) always told me to ….

Do my best.

Do you have a favorite word?

No – far too many (seriously) to choose from.

If you could invite anyone (past or present) to dinner, who would it be? Please explain why.

  1. Joanne Rowling I have some things in common with her: No money, a belief that I can write for children, the willingness to forgo common comforts and the tenacity to keep writing. I want to share more. I want Warner Brothers (or Steven Spielberg) to buy the rights and produce movies of my stories and let me write the scripts.
  2. Richard Ford – I attended his workshop at Munster Literature Centre in Cork, 2003.  He was inspiring and fascinating as a writer. Think ‘Independence Day’, Pulitzer Prize and the Pen/Faulkner Award. http://www.salon.com/weekly/interview960708.html
  3. Barbara Streisand – her grasp of melody, her strive for perfection, her non-compromising attitude and talent.  As a screenwriter I want to discuss films, as a not-so-gorgeous girl, I related to ‘Funny Girl’ but also as a woman, we’ve both recently fallen in love and found true romance after fifty.
  4. Lord Macaulay I want to know how he came up with the idea of writing ‘The History of England’ – never mind his approach and are we related?

What is your career highlight?

Writing: Winning a Furphy Award for the Best Children’s Book Manuscript ‘The Swimming Pool People’ 1983

Poetry: publishing my first book ‘Hidden Capacity ~ a poet’s journey’ in Ireland 2003.

Film:  the film of my script ‘Love You Mum’ made in 2005 then the film winning Best Film & many other awards or nominations in festivals here and overseas.

What is your career lowlight?

Not being eligible for nomination for the film ‘Love You Mum’ in any of the awards it was entered, many of which it won, here and overseas because I wasn’t a resident of South Australia.

What are you currently working on?

Current writing a War-time love story/feature based on my parents: Dad was a Pathfinder in the RAF and Mum was a WRAF Sergeant so I’m engrossed in family research AND writing manuscripts for picture books.

I can hear the sea outside my window

and the beat of the waves against the sand.

The glimpse of your face in the shadows,

tears down my cheek, splashing on my hand.

My paper’s all covered with lines that I write

trying to express what countless poets have said..

To put into different words how I fight the emptiness

of my room and the loneliness ahead.

I’m making my own unhappiness as punishment

for leaving you because I was proud

Waiting for a letter you may have sent,

trying to be happy with what surrounds.

There’s nothing that means very much to me.

What I want I can’t have – I did it to myself.

You’re not to blame because you couldn’t see

how serious all the little things were, that I felt, to me.

Since the net has been playing up, I’ve had time to do all sorts of things, pick up a pencil to draw or read books – such a luxury.

One of the first I’ve chosen is  ‘Walking Here’ by my friend Jessie Lendennie, of Salmon Poetry and THE best bookshop in Ireland, fame.  I’m enjoying it so much and couldn’t resist sharing one of her poems with you.

141030JesieWalkingHereDOC

Jessie and her family are mourning the recent loss of two of her beloved ‘pack’ but I know they still run to that rock pool, whenever she goes walking around the amazing Cliffs of Moher.

??????????

So sorry I’ve been absent again… my internet access is intermittent (at best) but they’ve promised to fix it by 6th November!

(This is a very quick post to apologize. ) I’m using the time to practice my sketching so I can better illustrate my children’s books.

13SantasSwimHBCoverWEB

‘Santa’s Swim’ was my first attempt.  Busy putting a few new stories together now, inspired by the 12 x 12 sessions which I highly recommend.

Although I studied CPB’s thoroughly at University, I’ve learned a lot about current practices, putting pictures to words for children though discussions with other Children’s Picture Book writers through the Vanilla Forums of 12 x 12.

Hopefully normal ‘transmission’ will resume as soon as possible…

“Buy experience, not things.”

Today, Zambia is celebrating 50 years of independence – 24th October 2014 and I can’t help singing to myself – her 1st President Kenneth Kaunda’s signature song: Tiyende Pamodzi :   “Let’s go together in harmony.”

1962KitweGirlsTennisTeam

I’m still torn between my idyllic childhood in the center of Africa, Northern Rhodesia now Zambia and Perth, Western Australia where I’ve been ever since leaving ‘home’.

elesmana_dickpitman

Mana Pools, Zambezi River.

They say, once you’ve crossed the mighty Zambezi River  you’ll always return. I haven’t yet. I keep in ‘touch’ though, with many friends who have or who also miss ‘home’ and enjoy sharing wonderful memories.

Lowdown Magazine is written by Heather Chalcraft who takes amazing photos of Zambia now.  This is the Flamboyant or Flame Tree, the sight of which takes me back to Kitwe and Lusaka as quickly as Jacarandas do.

In fact, my man and I reunited on the Great North Road website after 28 years and have been married for 10, so I owe Zambia a great debt for a wonderful childhood, fantastic memories and now, my happiness.

Tiyende Pamodzi…

Your 50 Zambian years means I am 50 years older.

I was at school when you became independent

but your Independence triggered my own at 14.

Not wanting to repeat a year I had just finished,

I refused and found myself a job, instead. My

idyllic childhood safe in Mother Africa’s arms

meant we learnt young to be strong, resilient

finding our own way through the jungle.  Confident,

courageous and convinced of our immortality.

I blossomed in your sunshine and freedoms.

As pioneers we knew we could turn our hands

to whatever was required to get the job done.

And we did.  During the struggles, shortages

were a given but ever resourceful we shared,

surviving together.  The best lesson for life.

FINAL-lines-in-the-sand-low

ACT 1:  This poem “Desertification”  1st appeared in the 2007 anthology  of Fellowship of Australian Writers WA  “Lines in the Sand”, on page 28.

ACT 2:  Also that year, I was flattered to be asked to read it at the launch of John Kinsella‘s “Shades of the Sublime and Beautiful” published in 2008 by Fremantle Press,  together with Dennis Haskell and Glen Phillips, in the University of WA bookshop.    There was a video taken that night but I can’t get it to upload here…

ACT 3:   This poem inspired a young poet Marlia Douglas to write her own poem with the same title.   I found all this out when Marlia turned up at one of my Poets Corner events.

She just happened to be in the State Library when it was on, and poked her head in to listen.  As host I was constantly looking out for new poets and convinced her to read in the Open Mic section.

Marlia said her poem had been inspired by Frances Macaulay Forde’s poem of the same name and didn’t even realize I had just introduced her to the audience.   They were mostly regulars and applauded loudly when they heard her comment knowing she didn’t know who I was.

Her version of the poem later appeared in INDIGO JOURNAL Vol3  (2010) which also included another of my poems “My Life as a Sari”

ACT 4:   This is a recording of the poem I did a few years ago.

desertification

before cultivation the water flowed

bouncing on leaves falling falling

to pool on fertile forest floor below

before cultivation the water flowed

flora bursting with life and clean air

jostling for sunspace canopy flirting

before cultivation the water flowed

we didn’t listen as we ploughed

clearing tree roots to feed fields

before cultivation the water flowed

now encrusted salt lusts after land

no sweetness here just bitter dry sand

Carol's Cross - Paudie LS

Left Field

Lined up like the Waterford cows,

metal bodies glitter in an Irish field.

Their black rubber circles squelch

acres of reconstituted bovine cud.

A Friesian audience has gathered

to ruminate on two-legged animals

with red and white coats, running

and hurling a stone to each other

between showers, near Carol’s Cross.

Years ago, Julie Chevalier and I were members of on-line poetry critique group run by the amazing Ron Pretty who established the Australian Poetry Foundation  and now has a competition named after him.

I enjoyed her poem “The moon and the stars were our chandelier” published in ALPHA – Issue 1, of WRIT, Western Australia’s newest poetry review on-line zine.  (Although they’re asking for submissions for the next issue, unfortunately WRIT cannot afford to pay its contributors.)

Julie gave me some excellent constructive comments for my poem: “Front Page Impact” which I posted a short while ago.  I recommend you take a moment and read some of her award-winning words.

12Nov03KalamundaVMarkets (15)

Each month, hubby and I peddle our wares at Kalamunda Village Market.

It has an old-fashion market feel with music from my era (60’s & 70’s) piped around the park by good quality HD speakers and I often find myself grooving to the beat between customers.

Used to be that you could only have a stall if you made everything yourself, locally.  Nowadays they seem to have slackened that rule, more’s the pity…

What really cheers up my day is when the crowds suddenly turn red and purple with the arrival of the ladies from the “Red Hat Society”.

The movement stated in America with Jenny Joseph’s poem, “Warning.” given to Sue Ellen Cooper of California with a red Fedora as a birthday gift.

Now 40,000 PLUS chapter in the US and many in 30 different countries later, members certainly brighten up any market!  Good on them!

Red Hat Society

I don’t have to wait – to get old before

they let me in to their secret society.

Not to wear the red hat – I must wear pink

until I reach that exalted time.  I must be

content to wait, but practice I may, so as

not to shock those close with the changes.

When I finally get to the place where there

is fun after fifty* and I can make up for the

sobriety of my youth.* Here’s my heads-up,

my ‘Warning’ – an ode to non-conformity.*

Academy award winning actor Russell Crowe is stepping behind the camera to direct (as well as in front) for a story which looks amazing.   Russ has just released the trailer and I confess, I can’t wait to see it.

The script is by Andrew Anastasios and Andrew Knight and if you watch this ‘1st look’ video, everyone was impressed by it, hence their involvement in making the film.

I love how the script kernel was just one line about a man searching for his son’s grave – in Gallipoli.  (Perfect timing Russ with the Gallipoli Centenary next year.)

I’m looking forward to it, although I’ll have to, until it’s release at Christmas.

Oh well, they do say good things come to those who wait…
