With a lot of help researching my family history, I received this copy of a letter written in 1889 by my great-grandfather.  Thank you, Angus Smith, researching people of the Isles.

Synchronicity. Serendipity. A kindling of the imagination. I am scrolling down the myriad programme options on my TV menu when I see a documentary called, ‘Pipers of The Trenches’ and immediately press the record button as it unites my interests in History and Music. Resolving to watch the programme later I punch the play button […]

On the 5th June 1944 Margaret McAlpine Bell Macaulay married Flight Lieutenant J.A. Forde DFC who was a Master Bomber with the Pathfinder Squadron.  Quite apart from being a mum to four and a wonderful wife to my hero dad, my mum was a hero too.

Unlike Dad’s logbook detailing his flying in WW11, I have no record to refer to Mum’s experiences in the WAAF.  The only time she ever mentioned the war she told me she started smoking while sheltering in an underground station, with hundreds of others, as bombs rained down during the Blitz of London.

My husband and I applied (on her behalf) for and received the medals Mum was entitled.  I wish we’d been able to show our pride when she was alive.InfoMedals_0002DOC

The novelist Alexander McCall Smith and the actress Helena Bonham Carter have both offered to cheer up lockdown-stricken readers of The Sunday Times.

McCall Smith has written a poem, below, in honour of health workers who are risking their lives to help the sick.

The Scottish author has two daughters who are doctors working on the coronavirus front line. “Now we have come to realise that all about us there are heroes,” he said.  READ THE FULL ARTICLE AND HEAR HIS POEM

I remember reading his book when I was young and have never forgotten the ending… so tragic and so full of the Africa I knew. If you haven’t read it – I recommend you do.
