mv5bmgyyzjk4mdmtytzmms00ywm2ltgxndqtm2ewnzq2mdzhnwqxxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvyndyymdk5mtu-_v1_sy1000_sx670_al_I was 15 or 16 in 1965 when ‘The Sound of Music’ was released and probably got to see it pretty soon after, at our local Astra Cinema in Kitwe, Zambia.

Yes, we did have cinemas in the ‘wilds of Africa’ and we got new releases pretty soon after they were…    You got dressed up then – women even wore gloves and a gorgeous outfit to evening showings.

When I was younger it was a big deal to go to the cinema every Saturday morning, then off to OK Bazaars to spend our 2 shillings & 6 pence pocket money on some cheap trincket.

We had to meet Mum and Dad at the Kitwe Club for a pickled fish and crusty bread (and lemonade) lunch on the verandah.   Sometimes, we’d spend the afternoon playing tennis or watching the adults.

Fast foward 50 years and I’ve just watched my great niece Taisen play Gretyl in the Broadway stage production of ‘The Sound of Music’ right here in Perth, Western Australia!

Taisey was WONDERFUL! She absolutely stole the show for me – and not just because she’s ours, but she seemed to feature each time she was on stage – she just grabbed it with both hands and had a wonderfull time! The joy was obvious. Her characterization was fantastic and that voice was so strong. Love, love, loved it all – EVERY MOMENT!

FILM NOIR is one of my favourite genres, so I found this article very interesting:

“Why The Girl on the Train heralds the return of the Hitchcockian thriller”

Such a familiar childhood… Congratulations, Louise.

In the lead up to the launch of Serenity Press’s upcoming Writing the Dream anthology (available for pre-order here), I’ll be sharing guest posts from some of the contributors. Thanks to Louise Allan for this short and sweet post. Louise is a Perth writer whose first novel will be published in September 2017 by Allen and Unwin. It was shortlisted for the 2014 City of Fremantle-TAG Hungerford Award and prior to that, she was awarded a Varuna Residential Fellowship to work on it. You can read more of Louise’s writing on her blog, or catch up with her on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram

When I was a kid, we seemed to have days and days with no commitments and nothing to do. Weekend sport hadn’t been invented, and homework could be dashed off in milliseconds, so there was plenty of time for reading and playing.

So what colour should love be

on the face we show the world?

Is fear the white make-up base?

The veil clothing us in past experiences,

keeping them close in our minds?

Do blue brows give early warning

above our windows to the soul –

predicting a cautious tale of woe?

The vehicle of words which wound

wears lipstick red – do they reveal

blood spilt in misunderstanding?

When make-up is removed

will it wash away fears, expose

the truth – leave us naked?

Are we all clowns, underneath?

I’m really looking forward to celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Fremantle Press at the Great Big Book Club High Tea. It’s going to be a terrific afternoon of celebrations at The Fremantle Esplanade on Sunday 16th October. For me it’s a chance to catch up with fellow writers whom I haven’t seen for ages, and hopefully to meet lots of readers.

The Big Book Club event is already sold old, but there is another terrific event in store a few weeks later on Wednesday 2nd November. It’s the celebration to announce the winner of the 2016 City of Fremantle TAG Hungerford Award. The award celebrates the life and work of much loved WA writer, the late Tom Hungerford, with a prize of $12,000 and a publishing contract with Fremantle Press.

I am pleased to be doing a reading along with other Fremantle Press authors such as Kim…

UWA Publishing is releasing a new edition of Elemental for the Australia/New Zealand territory, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. It’s a new size and a new price—with a new cover, too. I confess I will miss the original image of my wee reid-heid, with her arresting stare, but I love this new, atmospheric vision for the novel…

Elemental front cover

I’m told the new edition will be in stores on 1 December but is available for ordering via the UWA Publishing website next week.

What can you say when it hurts too much to write;
when pain fills your veins and hands hold your face.
Falling…from a safety net, to the cold hard ground.
You are my rock, my shelter, my safe place to land.
