Making Up

Are we all clowns, underneath?

With faces painted, emotions

cleverly masked, windows

of the soul… concealed?

When make-up is removed

Will it wash away fears,

finally reveal thoughts,

make us naked?

Or tattoo a memory

of past love in pain

punishing or celebrating

that which shapes us.

Perhaps still clothe ourselves

In past experiences

keeping them close

to our hearts?

…and what colour should love be

on the face we show the world?

Is fear the white make-up base?

Do Blue Brows give early warnings

above our windows of the soul,

predict a cautious tale of woe?

The vehicle of words which wound

wears lipstick red – do they reveal

blood spilt in misunderstanding?

Are we all clowns, underneath?

With faces painted, emotions

cleverly masked, windows

of the soul… concealed?

Mum&RosesKitweCU

Mum, Amazon Crescent, Kitwe, Zambia, 1972.

Today would have been my dear old Mum’s 84th birthday.  I wish I could give her a hug, like I do in my dreams.  It’s also the anniversary of my husband first finding my name on the net in 2002 (after 28 years apart) then that hug and a promise to explore the possibilities of love, again.

I think it was Mum’s way of hugging me… bringing my love back to me.

30802SuePaudieLargeScan

Taken in 2002, the day after he flew to Perth from Ireland via South Africa, to hug me.

My Knight

In the afternoon of my life,

settled,

content and comfortable

in my alone-ness

you question me!

You destroy

my strong defenses,

obliterate

my sense and reason

to let you in!

For my heart,

bow wave of confusion,

tense terror times

of doubt and fear

~ unknown ~

risk everything,

my ordered now!

The colours of my life

changing to a

different hue…

You terrify me!

Wanting – needing

arms that enclose

a broken heart…

Make it whole again!

The White Gate

The path is Agapanthus strewn

freedom for women colours;

green and purple heads bob

in the Freo Doctor, interrupted

by blossoms which match the gate.

Hung upon squat solid upright stone,

it swings inwards, inviting entry

to this secret garden, lusted with

love, Christmas feasts, familial

fecundity, rapturously shared.

Reluctantly closed until next year…

For lovers of books, bookshops will always entice.

I’ve mentioned my favorite bookshop, nestled in Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland is also a Literary Centre, run by Jessie Lendennie, publisher of Salmon Press.  A meeting place for those in the poetry scene in Ireland where Jessie is both necessary and influential.

Across the oceans, here on the Cafe Strip in Fremantle, Elizabeth’s Bookshop has long been a place to fall into soft couches with a favorite tome and lose yourself for a while.

MillPointCaffeBookshop in South Perth serves coffee and is a favorite haunt for a writer friend who literally immerses himself in words, while he creates.

While Boffins Bookshop in Williams Street in Perth City specialize…

The Boffin

Bookshops are like lovers,

they numb in black & white

then seduce you with colour,

titillate and tempt your soul

until you finally let go,

find the courage to close

the book ~ pages which leave

you gasping  The breath of air

on your face feels like a slap.

Original ‘Praying Hands’ Painting  by Rosa Niehaus © 1960’s

African Hands

I saw a picture the other day

of two hands clasped in prayer.

The story they told was the truth

about an old man from his youth.

The lines of worry were all there

with the happiness, love and despair.

With the death he had seen

of the friends that had been…

Showing the scars of war,

all the fights from before.

When he looks at his hands, does he see

how his future’s going to be?

A struggle before he dies?–

We should all have eternal lives!

He knows death must be near,

I wonder if he has any fear?

I grew this Hibiscus bush from a cutting when my garden was being cleared for re-modelling.  Look at her now – isn’t she beautiful?

??????????

FMF © 2014

These magnificent blooms usually last for weeks but unfortunately, due to a recent 44 degree day have been deep fried, until I don’t recognize them, at all!

??????????

FMF © 2014

So sad is the sight, I couldn’t bear to photograph their demise but hope they’ll come back… be resilient in pink profusion once more.

I’ve even painted them a couple of times and used the results to illustrate my postcards.

Posted on Facebook by Yanchep Volunteer Fire Brigade © 10th Jan 2015.

I live in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia near Joondalup.  We are the most isolated city in the world. We also have a regular bushfire season – now.

Each and every volunteer, out there fighting in impossibly terrifying and horrendous conditions, is a hero – a Fire Angel!

We’ve had a few fires already in the last few days;  one deliberately lit near my daughter’s house in Yangebup (she could see the huge flames from her suburban backyard), and one in the Hills area of Araluen threatening her father’s home.

To give you some idea of how big our Metro area is; it takes me 45 min straight down the freeway to visit my daughter on the other side of our city and another 45 to get back – when not in rush hour.

For the last three days up to 300 local and interstate volunteer fireman have battled a fire in Bullsbrook which is heading toward the Northern Suburbs of Clarkson & Butler – not far from us.

Currently this particular fire has burned its way through 6650 sparsely populated but farmed hectares, destroyed a couple of derelict homes and some outbuildings since Saturday morning and forced the removal of livestock.  I heard one woman on TV tearfully say she’d had to leave her goats…

It flares up with the early morning Easterly or opposite Sea Breeze., constantly changing fire fronts, crossing containment lines and exploding trees.  (More stories on the fire.)

Thankfully, it’s now been down-graded to a ‘Watch and Act’ according to FESA Alerts  which means there are still 100 volunteers watching and acting on our behalf.

It’s been absolutely devastating but so far the ‘fire angels’ are making sure no human is seriously hurt.

I do worry about all the animals though…

Fire Angels

I read

on someone’s

post they saw flocks of

birds fly – fleeing the flames.

Be safe!

Grace Forde © 2014 Perth Daily Photo BLOG

Today Perth reached 44.4 degrees just before 2pm – 36.7 degrees by 11am and the 3rd hottest day for January on record.

I’ve copied one of my sister-in-law’s excellent beach photos to show you what is just down the road from here… but you won’t find me there – I don’t go out in extreem heat!

Everything in the garden is wilted – I’ve just replenished the bowls of water for the birds again and given all my pot plants a good soaking.   I know the birds will find the bowls and take a dip later… to cool down.  Whether I can save my plants is another thing entirely… that sun was brutal today.

Sun kissed

Like a cobra,

I am coiled

ready to strike

any who dare

limit my growth.

Germinating new

species hidden

deep in the earth

waiting to bloom

coloured with sun.

Tensioned taut,

fire ravaged, I am

nature harnessed

before springing

back to life.
