Baghdad Ballet

(March, 2003)

A young boy sits, on his mother’s shoulders,

smile-excited in the sunshine,  taking part in a parade.

He proudly thrusts the finger-sign of peace.

Nice to see in an Iraqi child – family

bombardered by ‘Shock and Awe’ the night before,

forgiving.

But the visual is blitzed as it flashes onscreen,

by the plastic Sten gun held aloft,

background-brandished in the child’s other hand.

Do you think the young lad plays

in secret tunnels, knows where to hide,

where doubles walk to keep the myth alive,

the magic tricks to keep awake illusions

of a still-controlled-city.

Streetlights burn in defiance of invaders largesse.

Traffic moves through the night

while bright glows explode in distant thunder

and shower shrapnel as

we sit on green comfy sofas,

presumed warm and safe inside,

miles away watching the performance

on TV young Liam wears red and white,

holds his defiant hurly high – a warrior

enjoying the sunshine day parade

– a protest for peace in Shannon.

Midleton McDaid's DS

(I’m a Folk music follower from way back and established the  Wanneroo Folk Club  in Perth’s northern suburbs in 1985. )

McDaid’s Pub, Midleton, Co Cork is very well known for it’s regular Folk performances.  I lived there for 14 months and t’was lovely to discover a thriving Midleton Folk Club a short walk down the road.

This is a beautiful version of “Passage West” recorded at the club and performed by Caroline Fraher who can also be seen doing a duet with Josh Groban on her web page.

We enjoyed the informal, crowded, traditional music venue’s atmosphere.  Having to sit on the floor didn’t faze us at all – I was soaking it all up, until this…

McDaid’s Folk Club

We carefully stepped through the seated crowd,

she smiled in surprised delight

and pulled you down

to whisper invitingly.

I watched the young guitarist finger-pick,

thought about her possessive

hand placed on your

willing arm and felt sick.

Roadside E30, Co.Cork, Ireland.

Fetal naked at fifty.

I’ve followed signs to Yield in Ireland

when I’m used to an Aussie Give Way

I put on red lipstick, tell you stories

of Africa when we were both young

and watch my words seduce you again.

You remember young Chianti;

full and round, ruby red, peppered

with berries.  I remember

a Hotel in Kitwe – Blue Nun.

You say your taste has matured,

you now prefer an Aussie Shiraz;

sharp, punchy, still youthful

– allowed to ripen with time.

I imprint your palate with my being

so no other will satisfy – am absolutely

involved in strong pulsing waves.

You suddenly stop

and fold my legs over

so I lay fetal naked at fifty…

you lean forward to whisper

my tongue is sweet.

Red

Hidden_Capacity_1

Jessica McCallum © 2003

RED is supposed to be

fiery tempered

liable to catch alight

at any time, smouldering

heat – just waiting

to ignite – right?

That’s on the outside…

Her surface simmers

but inside she’s easily hurt,

has no confidence and

feels fat when she isn’t.

She just wants to be

loved for who she is.

Wants someone to see

past her red hair and

the stereo-typing.

Vincente Romero © 2007-2009

As I’m focused on picture books for children through my 12 x 12  challenge, I’ve also just enrolled in a class on The Art of the Picture Book illustration class with Shadra Strickland.

(Of course, I could never be as good as Vincente Romaro who’s paintings I’ve just discovered!)

So for a ‘tester’ project, I’m going to use a poem I wrote many years ago (and I mean many) in the early 60’s called “The Prima Ballerina”.

I hope to show you how I adapt it to a PB and slowly, how I have a go at illustrating it too…

The Prima Ballerina

She lives in a world of fairy tales,

all fantasy, happiness and woe.

Floating across the stage in tulle,

fine silk or organza.,

softly pirouettes through the mist,

or dies upon the snow.

This is the world of Ballet

of the Prima Ballerina.

So lithe and slim, so beautiful,

so graceful and serene.

On stage, supremely untouchable

yet so frail behind the scenes.

She’s the Queen of the ‘Corps de Ballet’,

the star with the golden feet,

dancing her way through ‘Petruska’,

‘Swan Lake’ or the ‘Nutcracker Suite’.

The audience, transfixed with awe,

watch silently, as in a dream,

for gripped by suspense and beauty

 – such as they’ve never seen!

They observe the scenery so real,

the superbly made costumes,

but their eyes are fixed on the ‘Bluebird’

and all it’s fine blue plumes.

And when the ballet is done,

And encore after encore taken.

And baskets and bouquets

of flowers dispensed….

There’s a feeling of despair and longing

at the end of such unforgettable enchantment.

Mum&RosesKitweCU

Mum, Amazon Crescent, Kitwe, Zambia, 1972.

Today would have been my dear old Mum’s 84th birthday.  I wish I could give her a hug, like I do in my dreams.  It’s also the anniversary of my husband first finding my name on the net in 2002 (after 28 years apart) then that hug and a promise to explore the possibilities of love, again.

I think it was Mum’s way of hugging me… bringing my love back to me.

30802SuePaudieLargeScan

Taken in 2002, the day after he flew to Perth from Ireland via South Africa, to hug me.

My Knight

In the afternoon of my life,

settled,

content and comfortable

in my alone-ness

you question me!

You destroy

my strong defenses,

obliterate

my sense and reason

to let you in!

For my heart,

bow wave of confusion,

tense terror times

of doubt and fear

~ unknown ~

risk everything,

my ordered now!

The colours of my life

changing to a

different hue…

You terrify me!

Wanting – needing

arms that enclose

a broken heart…

Make it whole again!

For lovers of books, bookshops will always entice.

I’ve mentioned my favorite bookshop, nestled in Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland is also a Literary Centre, run by Jessie Lendennie, publisher of Salmon Press.  A meeting place for those in the poetry scene in Ireland where Jessie is both necessary and influential.

Across the oceans, here on the Cafe Strip in Fremantle, Elizabeth’s Bookshop has long been a place to fall into soft couches with a favorite tome and lose yourself for a while.

MillPointCaffeBookshop in South Perth serves coffee and is a favorite haunt for a writer friend who literally immerses himself in words, while he creates.

While Boffins Bookshop in Williams Street in Perth City specialize…

The Boffin

Bookshops are like lovers,

they numb in black & white

then seduce you with colour,

titillate and tempt your soul

until you finally let go,

find the courage to close

the book ~ pages which leave

you gasping  The breath of air

on your face feels like a slap.

141227Anniversary 006W

My handsome hubby and I are celebrating our anniversary today ~ 11 years since we finally said ‘I do’; almost 2 years after he found my name on the net;  28 years after first meeting in 1974.

Thank you for finding me again… I love you more now, than I ever did.

Play Me…

I am so hungry.

My lips crave the taste

of your skin ~ your lips.

My body wants to spend

days ~ years forever

wrapped in your strength,

safe and warm, held by

familiar arms, touched

by tender hands, played

by musical fingers ~ let

me be your piano!

Play me…
