In the
silhouette
of your
beauty,
your dreams
be
hidden,
Why?
Maybe
your dreams,
are
mine!

In 2008 I was asked to be the visiting poet for National Poetry Week. My one-off visit was so popular, the school asked me to stay on for a few more weeks – the students enjoyed discovering poetry.
I wrote this poem in class to demonstrate and encourage them to have a go too and was surprised how many actually got up to read the resulting words.
School Daze
butterfly jumper
Thai yellow shoes
rhythm and rhyme
gave us the clues
words with a reason
passionate hues
snapshots of feeling
images in blue
it takes real talent
possessed by few
to write something cool
in a couplet or two
or a french cinquain
japanese tanka or haiku

We also opened a Poemhunters webpage so students could contribute poetry with their teacher supervising.

I came home alone
on my own (again)
in the rain.
The room was cold
and bare – empty
without you there.
Mind dull with pain,
face wet and stained,
full of mascara and grief.
Of goodbye – disbelief!
Morning holds
nothing new.
The usual chaos
and boredom.
No you…

Our Hibiscus is flowering again – don’t know how many times a year it does, but it does with no attention from me. Except to snip some of her beautiful blooms so I can paint them…

Raindrops
Like tears,
rain hits my umbrella.
Bouncing, bursting
droplets scattering,
spreading my pain.
Shimmering images.
Reflections of you.
Love like rain,
showers me
with tears.

A delicious dance
In my kitchen
I contemplate a new mix,
a special combination
with heightened flavours.
The perfected recipe.
At last, a chance
to bite into real love!
The thrill of discovery
I’ve tried unsuccessfully
to master, for years.
Many times before,
I tried blending,
picking ingredients
so carefully…
impatiently
stirring the pot.
But I wrongly used
wooden utensils –
failed to find
the perfect dish,
until you added
that extra dash.
That mysterious tang
which previously
eluded my search –
the ultimate formula.
Tempting my taste buds,
leaving them bereft
of that special essence;
everlasting love.
You are the recipe
and lust the icing
on my now perfected
carrot cake of life.

A friend posted a notice on Facebook after attending a funeral – not normally something you ‘share’.
The reason she posted was the poem read; “The Dash” by Linda Ellis.
Take a moment, her words make you think…
