06FMF Postcard 16

A while ago, I was introduced to the French Cinquain and fell in love.  The rhythm and structure seems to flow easily for me, so I wrote quite a few.  This one is from a series of five written after a workshop in 2002.

The photo was taken when my sister-in-law Hazel and I had lunch in a little restaurant on South Perth foreshore, with views over the mighty Swan River to Perth City, on a foggy Autumn Day.

I learnt an embarrassing lesson yesterday; don’t rush!

I hit the ‘publish’ button like I would the ‘enter’ button – big mistake!  Unconcerned, I thought I’d just correct and ‘Update’ which, of course, I did in seconds.

Embarrassingly the preview of the blog post (goes everywhere!) stayed as the original un-edited version although when ‘read more’ was clicked, the corrected version appeared!

Lesson well and truly learnt!  Writing and posting when you’re tired or in a rush – just don’t do it!  I do sincerely apologize.

Hopefully I can make amends with a poem written before love returned to my life.

DOORS CLOSING

How often has the door closed on opportunity for me?

And how many times have I shut it?

‘Well, open it again.’ You say.  Not so easy

when it is wedged with prejudice.

Locked with lies about your femininity

and jammed with judicial errors.

I am an opportunist and I do believe

as one door closes, another… you know.

But sometimes, for my sanity, I take

the easy way out.  My heart’s the same.

I’m not brave in letting that door stand ajar.

The solid barrier protecting my comfort zone.

A jack-hammer wouldn’t be heard now!

I’m deaf to desire and numb to need.

The woolen blanket around my feelings keeps me warm.

I lock the door, pocket the key, work and love in secret.

When I first returned to Perth in Early December 2003 after living in Ireland for 14 months, the Jacaranda outside my kitchen window was in full bloom!

Hubby and I took a ride into the city via the Sunset Coast Tourist Drive, along the coast from just north of my suburb to Fremantle, back along the Swan River (home to our black swans) and into Perth City.

About to turn down, into the city… must take some more photos and this time, show you how our beautiful city sits next to the Swan, sparkling in the sunshine.

In the city now and looking up.

It was good to see skyscrapers again…   Cork didn’t have any really tall buildings in 2003 – part of it’s great charm.    Although 11 years later, the Perth skyline has changed and I should do an update…  If you enjoy this post, I will.

The multi-million dollar houses on Whitfords Avenue are the opposite of my little 3 x 1.  A different postcode 5 mins away, off the same Ocean Reef Road, means they have sea views and beaches at their feet.  I keep saying to hubby, if we just put another storey on our house, we’d see over the sandhill to the sea. too!   Ha-Ha.

QUOTE:  “Rodriguez was the greatest ’70s US rock icon who never was. Momentarily hailed as the finest recording artist of his generation, he disappeared into oblivion – rising again from the ashes in a completely different context a continent away.”  SBS Television will show the much-lauded documentary on Sunday night at 8.30pm.

I grew up in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia and recognized a song in this documentary from my youth.   My husband was born in Durban, South Africa and played professionally in bands for many years in SA and Zambia.  He also recognized Rodriguez and his songs from Cape Town university days when the lyrics were a national anthem for youth in a rapidly changing South Africa, swamped in “Apartheid”.

QUOTE:  “In the mid-1970s, Rodriguez’s music gained airplay in Australia and New Zealand and he toured here finding limited success in the late 70s, returning in 1981 when Midnight Oil joined him for some shows.”   It’s been announced he’ll be  touring Australia  this year.

The Oscar-winning documentary “Searching for Sugarman” is beautifully made with great respect and admiration for the undeniable talent of  Sixto Rodriguez – an homage to a counter-culture hero they thought had killed himself on stage.   It has many lessons…

ROAD RIBBONS TO FOREVER

still cold the orb lay low

quick glimpse then hidden

motor climbing to drown

crow’s haunting early wake-up call

blades of light chop dust and dirt

wheels trundle

bodies bounce

over troughs and ridges

silent stands of hewn wood

strangled by checked metal string

strung as divided zones

of labour or fields of food

for slow-moving wool-balls

unaffected by those

who pass once in a changing

between ghost gums

wind-dancing

don’t press the soft start

for raucous interruption

no technological intrusion

to spoil the quietness

of morning impressions

but watch silently

anticipating adventure

time seems to slumber

in camera shots

too fast moving past

before fully absorbed

an erect neck now tired

of turning back with regret

high sun and heat

decreasing

petrol gauge as low horizon

never nearer not revealing

road ribbons to forever

our slumberous gazes

glazed with scenes

of shadows lit

by white-moon shafts

squinting at the yellow

twin-tunnelled path

flexing muscles cramped

shivering with want

the first new glimpse

of home

you stare at me

This morning,  IGameMom’s  blog, “Read Aloud with Children”   reminded me of when I started a youth theatre group in the early nineties – and why.

Although I’d been a founding member of another community theatre group for a few years, directing and turning my hand to wherever was needed, my daughter was a natural on stage and when given parts, did them so well adult actors resented her abilities and complained.  She wanted a ‘voice’, even if it meant acting and saying someone else’ words – she wanted the chance to stand up and be heard.

NYT_FrontCoverWEB_2.26921656_large

Recognizing a similar need in other teenagers, I started Northern Youth Theatre in 1992 to give them and particularly my 15 year old daughter, more chances to get involved with production on whatever level – and what fun we had!

After introducing ourselves in a welcome circle, sitting on the floor (all on the same level), the next task was reading scripts aloud.  I was stunned by how many members told me reading aloud was no longer required in schools!

After four solid years of performance and presentation, this is their ‘Swan Song’, a play called ‘The Rat Race’ with members between the ages of 12 – 18 years old taking all the roles and making the performance happen in 1996.  They came up with idea after our brainstorming sessions, 3 members Scott, Jess and Travis wrote the script.  All members were involved in the production, acted, directed and even filmed the three sold-out performances. As Artistic Director I was extremely proud of their efforts worthy – and as one adult audience member said; “Why don’t you enter this in the local awards?  It would win – it’s that good!”

I’ve always believed reading aloud is an invaluable tool all children should learn until it becomes second nature.  The skill to stand in front of others and confidently communicate clearly will take them far.

wilfred

I think I’ve mentioned before, how many years ago I was commissioned to adapt Mem Fox‘s book ‘Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge’  for performance in Joondalup Library.

The little ones loved getting into character and using the simple props I had brought along… perfecting using a walking stick, pretending to be old and grumpy etc.  I loved their invention and whole-hearted immersion into a story they already knew and loved so they could ‘live’ it – present it their own way.

It again, was all about giving them a voice and a platform to stand on.  To allow children to hold their head up high with shoulders back, to clearly and confidently say what they want to say.

My novel started life way back  in 1986 as ‘Competing’ then became ‘Kathy’s Clown’ and finally ‘Toy Soldier’.

I’m still not sure what to call it… the story just won’t go away but I have had to adapt working ‘docs’ for each and it’s getting very confusing so I must settle on a name soon!

This 3 para Synopsis will give you an idea of the story and characters:

SYNOPSIS:  ‘Kathy’s Clown’

The Army Reserve is a volunteer group that consists of weekend soldiers.  Peter Watts-Brown is their Colonel.  He has made his hobby his career – his day job with the Department of Agriculture, pays the bills. He enjoys playing games – with the army, with money, with women.

His favorite opponent and total opposite at work and play is Colin Williams.  Colin is in line for promotion which Peter feels he deserves. He also wants Colin’s wife Kath.  Both have a team entered in the Blackwood Marathon held in the South West.  Each needs the validation of crossing the finishing line before the other. Both will do anything to win.

When one of the girls who works at the Research Center is murdered, the games turn serious. Both are prime suspects – now the real war games begin.

Because I’m busy re-writing my novel and also adapting it to the big screen, I thought I’d tell you how many different documents I’ve worked on concerning the same story and characters without reward.

For example, publishers usually require either one or the first three chapters however, Film Producers ask for so many different ‘docs’ it can be quite mind-blowing if you don’t know the purpose of or how to construct each format.

No 1: 1st draft Novel manuscript.

I’m not at all sure which number draft I’m on now as I’ve been working on it for so many years and changed computers so many times since them, I’m sure a few have been lost in the myriad of saving-method evolution.

In 1985 I wrote the first draft of 92 pages in three months when my very generous brother Paddy lent me his computer.  (I also managed to write a book of children’s stories  in the same 3 months.)  It meant I got the idea down on paper and the characters set in my mind.   Every couple of years I revisited it.

While at University studying for my degree in 2000, my Screenwriting units required different ‘docs’ for a feature script.  I thought using my story ‘Competing’ would be easier because I already knew the ending.

It actually wasn’t because I had to re-imagine my story for a visual medium – the polar opposite of most novels.  Luckily, I am a visual thinker so I was half way there…

No 2.  Logline.

The Logline is the hook.  If you can’t fit the premise of your feature on one line, perhaps you’re not completely clear on your idea.

‘Competing’ Logline:  Peter Watts-Brown plays games expecting to win but Colin Williams won’t let him; at work, at home or the Blackwood Marathon.

No 3:  ‘Synopsis’.

The synopsis is a snapshot of the story and characters meant to reel in the investors, so it has to be ‘sexy’ and can be any length, from 3 paragraphs to a 1/2 page,  1 Page or 3 Page Synopsis.

No 4: ‘Scene Breakdown’.

The Scene Breakdown gives a description of each scene or sequence, some in full as examples with dialogue but mostly just action to illustrate the flow of the story, which in this case finished at 29 pages.

No 5: ‘Treatment’.

By March, 2001 of my final year at Uni, I had a 19 page ‘Treatment’ sometimes called an ‘Outline’ of the story, which showed what happened in each scene written as narrative in story form, with no dialogue.

No 6:  Feature Script

When I left Uni I decided to actually start writing the script but then half way through, because of the different medium, I naturally found the story was changing to suit.  So back I went to the novel to do another re-write because I wanted both to ‘marry’.

That’s why I’m really not sure how many versions of the novel exist without going through all my old discs – some are even the old 4 inch square ones – and I can’t play them!

Since then I’ve done a Transmedia masterclass with Jeff Gomez and realized the differences make versions interesting – each should add new aspects of the ‘world’ I’ve created of story or characters.

Perhaps now you understand why I keep putting it away and coming back to it…

This photo was taken on the 16th August 2008 when Andrew Burke  kindly stepped in to host “Poetic Partners” at the  my second to last Poets Corner@Pages Cafe  monthly events.

He put together a mind-blowing-ly amazing list of guests; all very well established practitioners who agreed to share their words as poetic partners in life, love and poetry:

Glen Phillips & Rita Tognini;

Andrew Taylor & Beate Josephi;

Frances Arnett Sbrocchi  & N.J (Jim) Cornish;

Marcella Polain & Mike Williams.

Each have their own clear, poetic voices were an absolute delight to hear and watch.  I just wish I had recorded it for you…

As usual, Andrew Burke did an amazing job as host but also appeared as a guest at the following and last Poets Corner event on the 18th October 2008, this time hosted by Andrew Landsdowne.

His newest book “One Hour Seeds Another” was officially launched in fine style last week to an appreciative Perth audience,  by his friend and fellow poet, Andy Jackson.

I had to pinch this quote: “too much cinnamon/and not enough/metaphor” from  Andrew Burke and his poem “She Waits for Me” included in his latest book “One Hour Seeds Another”.
