For my super-fit little brother, it started on Tuesday with routine and minor day surgery on his sportsman’s knee which suddenly and shockingly turned into “Anaphylactic Shock” – with no history of allergies.

Two days in ICU ‘asleep’ and another two days of Coronary exploration which will be followed by more tests.  In the meantime, he has to accept the awfulness, the reality of coming so close to not being here…

The whole family thanked the powers-that-be for the excellent hospitals, doctors, nurses and all ’round care given unstintingly as a matter of routine, and the moments of sincere patience while we questioned.

So while his body shows the bruising, his throat clears of invasion and his heart and it’s many byways revert to their normal healthy selves, we are all a little more watchful and a little more determined to get healthy.

I never want to go through that again and wouldn’t wish it on anyone – least of all my family.

earls, nick

Random House Books.

Here’s to the amazing, the wonderful, the supremely talented and very kind – not to mention could-have-been-an-actor handsome  Mr Nick Earls!

OK, that’s a bit over the top but that’s how I’m feeling about him right now.  I will explain.

His newest novel is ‘Analogue Men’ and I wanted it.   On the 17th, I emailed Nick to ask how I can get hold of a signed copy for my daughter – we’re both huge fans.

This doctor turned novelist and most wonderful Nick, remembered he had met us way back in 2000 when he was the Writer in Residence at PCWC and we were his chauffeurs… (Chuffed at his memory!)

Needless to say my then 24 year old daughter and I were both very impressed with Mr Charm himself.  She still reads anything she can get her hands on and lists him as one of her top ten authors – so do I.

He suggested I purchase one from a bookshop in Brisbane, QLD for a tour event on Monday night; let the staff know I needed it signed and they would post it out to me.

I emailed, the staff said yes they’d do it but unfortunately although Monday came and went, so (seemingly) did the piece of paper the instruction was written on.

analogue-men-cover

Monday following, I received the book – unsigned 😦 and let them know straight away how disappointed I was, copying the email to Nick as a courtesy.

The kind, caring and conscientious Nick came straight back and said he would send one from his own stash, signed, in the mail forthwith!

Much as I appreciated his offer, I didn’t want him out of pocket so offered to send the copy I had to him to replenish his stocks.

Nick would not have any of it – he said and I quote:  ” The book is on its way.  If you’re in the habit of occasionally giving my books as gifts, then I’m coming out of this pretty well, so please keep the spare copy for someone who you think might like it, rather than incurring another mailing fee.”

Wow – at least three friends names came immediately to mind, I know would love it!

To be fair to the bookshop, they’ve said they will make sure Nick isn’t out of pocket, too.

But see –  what a wonderfully kind and patient man this abundantly talented writer is!

His Amazon Page has lots of his books available in print, digital media and I’ve linked the covers (above) to where you can buy.

Many of the new ones,  I haven’t read so Jess and I will be buying and playing catch up over the next few months.

(Anyone who knows Jess, keep this a secret until her birthday, please – I know she doesn’t read every blog post I do.)

Two of his books have been adapted to film and 5 to stage plays so far – impressive or what!

If you haven’t read Zig Zag Street, Batchelor Kisses, Perfect Skin, Headgames and many more.… get one now!

Be warned, his writing can make you laugh out loud and sudden bursts of laughter on the train can make fellow passengers very nervous.

Also for my overseas readers, if you want to experience the charm of Australian men, Nick Earls is the very best I can offer you, right now.

12-x-12-new-badge

Halfway through and I’m frantically trying to finish a manuscript to send to an agent through my 12 x 12 Picture Book Challenge with Julie Hedland.

I have so many manuscripts saved,  waiting patiently for my attention and felt disappointed I couldn’t muster up the time to do so.

This challenge has made me re-look at them, so I have picked two; “Suzette the Snake” (based on a poem) or “New” (based on a short story) and have been vacillating between them all week.  Although many others call to me and I keep getting new ideas, I want to just stick to getting something done with these two.

The opportunity to submit to an agent (each month) offered as a GOLDen Book Member is invaluable.  Although I know, as an Aussie participating in an American challenge I’m somewhat on the back foot, I wanted to push myself.  And rejection is empowering, isn’t it?

Support from other members in the Forum, on the Facebook Group page etc is both encouraging and inspiring when a member announces their successful signing or future publications.

So, I’m just focused on revamping my work, getting it ready for submission and actually experiencing being a member of the 12 x 12  group of Children’s Picture Book Writers.

Just back from the hometown premiere of this movie  ‘These Final Hours’ with an extra bonus Q & A session after the movie with  Writer/Director Zac Hilditch and Producer Liz Kearney.

Definitely not my usual fare, this film wallows in reality; the reality of knowing you’re dead – or will be in a couple of hours.  And absolutely nothing can be done about it except make bloody sure you spend your final hours exactly as you want – and be with whoever you want, when the end comes.

It’s dark, the premise is miserable; the ending foretold at the beginning and the cast of characters reacting predictably, except for the unlikely hero on his final journey.

Winner: The Age Critic’s Award Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) 2013 Best Australian Feature.  Screening Director’s Fortnight 67th Festival de Cannes, 2014  where it received a standing ovation!

The film is shockingly human, traumatizing and confronting-ly honest.  The characters disturbingly ‘real’ with outstanding performances by the leads, ably supported by many others – all perfectly cast.

Angourie Rice  has a HUGE career ahead of her and although I’ve not seen Nathan Phillips before, I’ll look out for him now.  He and his young co-star created magic in this film and made me cry.

I loved the guessing games and familiarity of home but hated the destruction provided by special effects and cinematography worthy of a much higher budget.

In other words, worth the $14 or whatever.  It opens on 31st Thursday this week at various cinemas.

Congratulations Team TFH – bloody well done!

Invention

I don’t need a Bell Curve

showing the Probability of Distribution

nor an economist theorizing

about the Positive Externalities

this is no pie in the sky nor castle in the air

although this is a novelty for me

an invention of a future

love is a collaborative result

a breakthrough in this human’s knowledge

an altruistic patent knowing I can love again

because necessity is the mother of invention

and we invented you and I

put into practice love after fifty

according to the five Laws of Limitations

(Diffusion of Innovations)

Knowledge

~ you found me on the net after thirty years

Persuasion

~ you in Ireland me in Oz and Messenger

Decision

~ both agreeing to Explore the Possibilities

Implementation

~ your plane landing at Perth Airport and that hug

and Confirmation

~ yachts and vows on Hillarys Boat Harbour

On Sunday, we took advantage of a free double pass from ABC’s RN Ideas Network  to see a preview screening of the movie  “Still Life”   at Cinema Paradiso in Northbridge, one of a couple of ‘alternative’ cinemas in Perth, Western Australia.   The critics have waxed lyrically with the film garnering awards at Venice, Edinburgh and other international festivals.

And may I say “Thank you, Uberto Pasolini”  the guy who also brought us “The Full Monty’ –  we loved it!  It’s  what I deem a typically well done ‘British’ film in that it is character-driven; character-centric and deliberately slower-paced compared to an American style of ‘commercial’ film-making.

The British seem to take their time, to allow an audience to absorb all the emotion, subtext and context, give them time to think about what they’re absorbing.  I see it as a form of audience respect.  Just like ‘Philomena’, ‘The Railway Man’, ‘Quartet’ etc as I’ve mentioned before in a previous  “Top 10 Movies of 2013”  blog post…

Although the subject and lead character seem dismal on the surface, this film is not slow and when the ending came I, as audience didn’t want it too.  My mind was full of questions about what happens next to others we had met in the last 2 hours…

Two days later I’m still thinking about the questions and beautiful clever human touches inserted perfectly into the visual narrative, making dialogue almost obsolete.

As a screenwriter I couldn’t fault the completed circle of story-telling carrying me so effortlessly, or the clues in the frame perfectly placed and plausible to the point of my being able to forget the production and direction involved – except to applaud it with everyone else, at the end.

Yes, a near-capacity cinema audience clapped loudly at the ending as they do when they are particularly moved, demonstrated clearly by how many sat and waited for all the credits to finish, before leaving.

I suspect we wanted our swollen, tear-filled eyes to reduce a little before the harsh glare of sunlight exposed just how much we were affected by such excellence.

In the light of terrible tragedy, my thoughts are with the families of passengers and crew of the Malaysian Airliner shot down today.

When will we learn to care about each other, again?

I thought I’d share a poem written when I was eighteen, in Africa and thinking of other wars many years ago.

It seems the world doesn’t change and we never learn…

ON MY SHELF

No-one knows me, no-one cares

as I lonely through my window stare.

Observing the world all by myself

Sitting alone on  my own little shelf.

I watch and judge the world and its ways

never taking part in it’s little plays.

Though some are bad and some are good

some of them I’ve never really understood.

Yes, I disagree with many moves

why can’t this world just learn to love ?

Do without wars and fighting – we should –

but somehow, do you think we ever could ?

The needless waste of human lives

The sorrow of a family that’s deprived

    (of their loved ones).

How unfair it seems that some should have

and others are left to scrimp and save.

How beautiful and rich some lands and

others consist only of sky and sand.

One day the world will right itself

while I sit, left alone on my shelf.

I started doing poetry postcards when I ran Poets Corner @ Pages Cafe as a giveaway on each table.  I figured if people were kind enough to sit and listen, they deserved a keepsake.

I’m still in the habit and find them useful as giveaways at readings and book events.   I get them printed – often for free, when VISTA PRINT  do ‘specials’.

This one has the first (the very first) oil painting I ever did, on it.  My dad gave me a set of oils for my 12th birthday and a small tester board.

I haven’t done more than a handful since but this first attempt at oils, was always my favorite.

The poem was written for my returned love; every time he turns to carry on with his everyday… I miss him this much.
